  5. "El este de naționalitate rom…

"El este de naționalitate română."

Translation:He is of Romanian nationality.

December 17, 2016

That's the literal translation but in my opinion "He has Romanian nationality" is how it would be translated (at least in British English)

What about "He is from Romanian nationality"?

No. A nationality is something you /possess/. "He is of Rom..." or "He has Rom..." or even "He holds Rom..." would all be good translations.

I translated as "He is Romanian" and continue to feel that is probably the most natural translation. He is of Romanian nationality does not seem "wrong" just slightly unnatural.

You can "have" citizenship, so although I'm an English mongrel, I could hold Romanian citizenship and do hold British (not English) citizenship. However I can't stop being English. Nothing in the original suggests this is about citizenship, rather something more like ethnicity.
