Yes, "to desire" is a synonym and should be accepted.

How to compare a vrea and a dori becuase in translation it gives 'wish' also for a vrea?

a vrea = to want ; a dori = to wish, to desire

I try to remember this one because in Finding Nemo, Dori 'wishes' to find her parents. Trouble is after ten seconds i forget again!

It always feels rude to me when trying to ask for something politely in Romania and saying "vreau...." even when i add "vă rog". Can a native assure me that is the best way of requesting something?

"vreau" gives a feeling of dominance. The polite way is "aș dori... (something)... se poate?”
