I saw these two sentences

  • Péter tévét néz
  • Péter néz a tévét

What's the difference? According to the source (page 234), there is no difference. But then you have to say "a tévét nézi", where did the extra "i" come from??! Can't I just say "Péter a tévét néz" and therefore stress that Péter is watching the TV not the radio, not the cat, etc.?

Péter tévét néz = Peter watches television

Péter nézi a tévét = Peter watches the television. You need "nézi" in the second sectence because there is a difference between definite and indefinite conjugation.

Might just be a coincidence but are you Zsuzsi, the Hungarian teacher from YouTube?

The word order is tricky in Hungarian. All 6 permutations are more-or -less OK here. I would say the best versions are, for your second sentence:

1.. "Péter nézi a tévét" 2. "Péter a tévét nézi" (Péter watches the tv)

Second best:

"A tévét nézi Péter" (emphasis on the TV)

A tévét Péter nézi. (emphasis on Peter)

Not that natural, but acceptable: Nézi Péter a tévét. Nézi a tévét Péter. (emphasis on nézi)

These two would sound better as a question. "Nézi Péter a tévét? Nézi a tévét Péter? (Ok, I see the tv is on, and Peter is sitting there, but is he really watching it?)

Unfortunately, I cannot see your source.

You need to understand that 'a' is a definite article, so you need to use a definite form of the verb in the sentences "Péter ...... a tévét" and "Péter a tévét ........". 'Néz' is the indefinite form for 3rd person singular, 'nézi' is the definite form. Therefore, the correct sentences are:

Péter tévét néz / Péter nézi a tévét

Sorry, I updated the link does it work now?

Ok, I understand the emphasis now. How free is the word order? Can I say "Nézi Péter a tévét" or does that contradict the order because the verb is first but the noun is emphasised? Also, can I say "Péter a tévét nézi" and "Péter néz tévét"? Or can I put the object first? "A tévét nézi Péter" or "A tévét Péter nézi"?

So it is. You can put the object first, because it is marked: it has a suffix (the "-t" ending in "tévét") so it cannot be mixed up with the subject.
