German music

Hello, folks!

Well, I know that there are many ways of learning a language, and I personally like listening to music while reading the lyrics and trying to grasp its meaning. Now, although we can always look for something with google, its efficiency is sort of limited. Hence, I'd like to ask for some help.

If you know some good song/artist of German musics, could you leave here their name and genre (and possibly a youtube link?) so we can all share some good music and culture? For exemple:

Klaus Hoffmann - Berlin (genre: popular music) Schubert - Erlkönig (classical, may be hard to find a real german pronunciation)

Well, I cannot offer much, unfortunately, but those willing to help are really welcome! Now, I just hope nothing like a German version of Justin Bieber comes out, but if it does, please let us know on the post ; )

Danke!

Hallo!

Fettes Brot - Emanuela (geiles Lied :p) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TtODgz8zx0

I like to torment my German friend with the fact that I like Tokio Hotel, a German..rock band (though I'd probably say they're more rock-pop..), Some songs are Durch Den Monson (Look Ma! Dative case!), Spring Nicht, Schrei and Über Ender der Weld, Hurricanes and Suns, and Automatisch.

He, my friend, in turn introduced me to the Donots, a German rock band who are good. I only have an English album of theirs so far but I like the sound.

If you do look up Tokio Hotel - do be prepared for a lot of emo, goth-ish angst and eyeliner. Also.. Teenagers.

I do love Einstürzende Neubauten an industrial band formed in 1980. Some songs I enjoy:

Was ist ist : http://youtu.be/rH0tbfKKbYc Alles: http://youtu.be/zHQMklkB7q0 Die Interimsliebenden: http://youtu.be/5FwcM_09POc Stella Maris: http://youtu.be/dYmRnl_J9GI

(but all their works are awesome)

Blixa Bargeld (leader of Einstürzende Neubauten) has got many great solo works and some collaborative songs. He's got songs in german, english and even in italian.

One of the best songs i've heard is: Küss mich wach: http://youtu.be/gRoE6X4vA6I

hope you enjoy :)

Well I don't know too much of the German music scene but I have stumbled upon some German music that I can share.

Band/Artist -- Song

Revolverheld -- Halt dich an mir fest [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtPLLqNkl1U ] This band is kind of Rock but this particular song softer than most their songs I think. This song is pretty easy on the ears. Very clear voices too.

We Butter The Bread With Butter -- Der kleine Vampir [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot6By1qWnAA ] WBTBWB is a Hardcore Screamo type band but this song is pretty catchy and not all of it is screamo. Keep an open mind and you may find yourself enjoying it!

EMMA6 -- Wie es nie war [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0T0yYYx7MU ] Pretty good music. I was surprised how much I liked them. Most of their music I think would fall under Alternative or something close to Pop.

Tim Bendzko -- Nur noch kurz die Welt retten [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-xf_H2xiAg ] This song is really laid back and super catchy. I don't know what to call it really. Yet, whatever it is, it is decent and I like it.

I found most of these artists with Last.fm. Maybe try heading over there and trying out their free on-website stream.

Also, I found a band by myself that turned up to be very cool... Try Tocotronic. They play 90's rock.

To my taste their best songs are:

  • Aber hier leben, nein danke

  • Hi Freaks

  • Gegen den Strich

  • Pure Vernunft darf niemals siegen

Regards!

Hi!

You can find all kinds of German music on the YouTube -- more than you'll ever be able to watch -- by typing what you want into their search engine. For example, German classical vocalists or German popular songs. Typing in German Disney songs will bring you some really cute ones from their movies. You can also type in German singers like Roger Whittaker, Conny Froboess, The Wise Guys, etc. When you type in a name you will get lots more names to choose from, too. There is also My Fair Lady in German, as well as Godspell. Who knows how many others?

One of my personal favorites on YouTube is Chocolate Chip Cookies by the Wise Guys. It's a musical recipe! There is an English version as well, and if I remember right, the text for the German lyrics can be found on the internet.

Another resource might be your local library. Do they subscribe to Freegal Music? Freegal means free and legal, and lets you choose from thousands of songs to download to your computer or tablet, including many many German songs. If your library uses Freegal, all you need is your library card. Ask them about it.

Hope that helps!

You are already listening to Schubert, but I still want to recommend all Schubert lieder. Lieder are great to learn from because they're only voice and piano, not a whole orchestra that may be distracting, and the words are typically pronounced clearly. And Schubert totally rocked the German Lied!

BACH (!), Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, and when you finish with those (or perhaps before since you may never feel you have finished with those) do not neglect Othmar Schoeck, who is a vastly underrated composer of German art song.
