(תפוח עץ או תפוח) ?What is the difference

I heard from a hebrew speaker that "תפוח עץ" means an apple, and "תפוח" is more like a friut. But he is not a natvie speaker and duolingo course says תפוח is correct as an apple so I'm not sure if he was right. So what is the difference between that two words?

The word תפוח is the same as תפוח עץ(Tree-Apple) and both mean apple. They are interchangeable, however omitting the עץ is more popular because its shorter. As a native Hebrew speaker I wouldn't have said תפוח is more like a fruit, the word פרי already serves this purpose. I think the עץ is added simply to differ that from תפוח אדמה(Earth-Apple) which means potato.
