Trilling the r

Anyone have any tips on how to roll the "r" in Swedish? I'm a native English speaker and I just can't seem to do it!!

You do absolutely not need to roll the R. It's purely depends on where you're from in Sweden that dictates whether you roll it or not.

Absolutely true- as long as the rest of your pronunciation matches one of those dialects. Perfecting the pronunciation in this course but dropping in an 'r' from a different region would be like mastering Received Pronunciation but pronouncing all of your 'th' sounds like Estuary English 'f'.

It's not really a rolled 'r', OP. In Central Swedish pronunciation it's more like a gentle tap against the teeth- like the very start of a trill, but not the whole thing.

It sounds a lot like like the American English medial 't'. Think of how many Americans say words like 'better' and 'hotter' and you're pretty close.

Thanks for this. I am trying the tap when I make the r sound. I think I may be getting the hang of it.

There is a comment here about the Swedish r - maybe look at that to see if it helps: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/5522768
