(I couldn't find a course request for this yet, sorry if there is and I missed it.)
I gave some Lingots. Please note: I have no clue what it entails to create a course for such a language and script - let alone how to learn it.
Though, having the means to learn the language would seem to be helpful in communicating with refugees.
Thanks for considering.
I work for the local 911 center in an area with a large number of immigrants that are native Tigrinya speakers, and the ability to understand them would be very helpful, especially since our language line does not have anyone that speaks this language.
I am an English speaker with parents from Eritrea and it would be AMAZING to have access to a tool like duolingo to learn more Tigrinya. It is incredibly difficult to find learning tools for this language online.
How do I get to contact Lrtward? Is there a messaging functionality on Duolingo?
Honestly, a Tigrinya course would seriously benefit not just people from Habesha families, but it would also give people with different languages and cultures an insight into our language. I am an Eritrean girl who unfortunately did not get to learn Tigrinya, as my family moved to America when I was just a toddler. While I am glad to be an 100% English speaker, it is very embarrassing that I am almost sixteen, and I can barely speak a word of my home language. Unlike Spanish or French, there are not many Tigrinya courses or methods to help learn the language. I understand that there is a higher majority of people wanting to learn Spanish or Italian over Tigrinya, but that is exactly why I ask that there be a course created for this timeless language.
i understand but do you know that there is a new way to learn tigrinya
i feel you i feel embarrased too because i am almost turning 16 too but i am learning tigrinya. you could also do it by talking to your parents tigrinya it would extremely help you too i promise.
I do a fair amount of translating and interpreting for social services; Sweden is getting a considerable amount of immigrants who are native Tigrinya speakers! I'd love to have a chance to communicate with them more easily in a way that they're comfortable other than the other way around. Go, Duolingo, go!
I agree that this would be an extremely useful language to be added! It's not terribly common in the western world and because of this I think it would be so helpful if social service workers had access to a learning platform like this. It's so hard to find qualified translators especially at low or no cost. It can be very socially isolating for this population to not be understood. It's also impossible for them to provide informed consent for services when they don't have a full understanding of what services they're signing up for. It would be nice to be able to empower workers who are interested in finding new ways to understand and communicate with their service populations.
Yes, it would be really helpful to add Tigrinya course on Duolingo.
Is this still a possibility?
I'm working at a language school in the Netherlands. We are regularly having Eritrean Tigrinya speakers in class not speaking English. This course would contribute a lot to be more easily able to explain dutch concepts and words to speakers of Tigrinya.
