Are the above two words synonyms and interchangeable? or if not, what are the differences?

It seems like arbeid means something more along the lines of labour —whilst jobb indicates profession or what you do to make a living.

Working in the garden, on a project — arbeid, hardt arbeid —"hard labour".

What do you do for work? — jobb

They are synonyms but "å arbeide" is more formal than "å jobbe".
