when I put in chwech on a previous question it told me it was wrong and yet when I chose only chew on this question it said it could be chwech as well - can anyone explain why please?

chwe munud is the correct version. (You may bump into chwech munud as well in the wild, but it is not strictly correct.)

I would actually say "it's almost nine" is that phrase more likely used these days

It does, but there is a mistake in the database which is hard for us to delete until we launch the next version of the course. (This is explained in the notes somewhere.) The correct form chwe will always be accepted as an answer where appropriate, and it should appear as a prompt about half the time on average.
