When do you use the imperfect subjunctive in Spanish?

When do you use the imperfect subjunctive in Spanish? Can you please provide examples? Also, what are some of the common irregular verbs?

There are several situations:

  1. someone in the past wishes or doubts something: "Tu padre quiso que tu estuvieras contento."

  2. talking about events in the past: "Es bueno que tu siguieras mi consejo."

  3. "If I/you/they were..." and related statements: "Si yo fuera rico, yo compraría una casa aquí."

  4. Polite requests: "Yo quisiera un café, por favor."

I have a few questions: -For #2, can I use the preterite instead? -For #4, can I say, "Quiero..." -Can you explain #1? Thanks!

Sure, the first one is saying "your father wanted that you be happy." So your father (in the past) wished or hoped for something to happen. So it has to be imperfect subjunctive.

In the second one, I'm not sure if the preterite would be acceptable.

And number 4, you can use "quiero" as in "I want" something. "Quisiera" is more polite though, like saying "I would like..."

This was my reference. They have a lot more examples: http://www.spanishdict.com/guide/spanish-imperfect-subjunctive

An example would be "Si yo estuviera en casa, estaría durmiendo." (If I were at home, I would be sleeping.)

Estaría is the imperfect subjunctive. The imperfect subjunctive is basically "would (verb)" in English.
