I understood "I" as "Я", but in this sentence it seems as if "I" translates to "У". Can someone explain please?

У мене є = I have. Common phrase translation.

here: I = у мене, have = є. ''Я маю'', can also be understood .

Іn translation from English to Ukrainian ''я маю'' used for the situation ''I have got''. - Do you have any brothers or sisters? У тебе є брати чи сестри? - Yes, I've got a brother. Так, я маю брата.

I don't understand why "Я" is not accepted as a translation for "I" and it was considered correct when using "В"

So i decided to use "Я маю" instead of "У мене є", but then it said that I was supposed to say "маму і таті??" Why did the endings change for Я маю, but not for У мене є?
