Since Finnish is likely to become the first language to reach 2000 upvotes and Finland turns 100 this year, does anyone think those are good enough reasons for the staff to add the course?
Note to staff: You can follow the example of Joe Biden and not wait until the Independence Day in December.
Not surprising, given that their stated mission is to make language education accessible to people of all means...
Thank you so much for the update! (I have to admit I have been checking to see if there was a new incubator update every day since christmas...)
wow Swahili for English still isn't making any progress it seems. I hope its ready by the 31st....
I am one of the Alpha Testers on the team. The tree is pretty much finished, but the contributors need to check through all the errors and make sure the tree is 100% ready. Then, we'll just need the audio in place and the course will be ready for release. Hopefully sometime in February:)
awesome! thanks so much for the update! I'm really looking forward to learning Swahili
I hope so! I'm leaving for Tanzania on March 1 and hope to be able to do a decent chunk of the tree before that! Thanks for the info.
Japanese for English was in the incubator for a minute, but seems to have been taken out
Yes, it was a glitch. They are working on making that course (figuring out the problems) and as a result that happened.
Well, although it would of course have been nice if it had really entered the incubator already, officially, it is heartening that they are indeed working on it still.
Hey, don't get me wrong, I love duolingo for what it's done for the language community, and made real impact on lanaguage course availability. there is a lot of interesting languages to dive in and so on....
I also want to emphisize that I am not and has never been an employee of duolingo or any other company/organization of that sort, so I have no insight on how to conduct such a project/business.
But really? Valyrian... Duolingo get your *&^ together. You (or whoever it was) choose artificially created language (I dont know if that lanugage is fully developed that covers gramatical/semantical/so on problems of natural languages) for the purposes of HBO fantasy drama over languages that were many times wanted and even desired by the community on forums ? can anybody explain the rationelle behind this ?
anyway, I do not want to hate overall. cuz Duolingo rocks, but I just couldn't say nothing about this.
It might not be an either/or scenario. If there are people available willing and able to help create a Valyrian course, it makes sense to have them work on that; it is unlikely that those same people would be able to work on a Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, or most any other course. I imagine the Duolingo main team has to do a bit of work to support the development of any language, but I think this is rather limited overall, and so the addition of pretty much any language that has the team to put it together as well as the technical support seems worthwhile to me.
Also, based on recent glitches (see just above), it seems obvious that they are also working on some of the more demanded languages, such as Japanese, and ironing out the problems that keep such languages from being added just yet.
