Does рассвет = рас + свет, "the spreading or diffusion of light (at the beginning of the day)"?

Even if it doesn't mean that exactly, it's still a useful mnemonic for remembering it. :-)

No, "twilight" is "сумерки". "Рассвет" doesn't have this meanìng.
