For Those Of You Experiencing Technical Difficulties
Earlier, HelpfulDuo posted this. I figured it bears a boost in the forums to quell the concern and fears of those of you who did not see said post, as it was also only in the Educators forum.
Starting from yesterday (as, it has been speculated, due to New Year's resolution traffic; neither confirmation nor negation has been given on this point, however), Duolingo began experiencing major issues on the servers and glitches started mounting. For an hour in good cases, four for some of the worse cases, Duolingo was inaccessible, and only error messages would be given upon attempting to visit the website. The website since has come back up, clearly, but it is still quite compromised. If you are experiencing any of these issues, chances are, you are not alone! The following have been reported: A) Activity streams not working B) Profile page not working/showing skills and personal stream C) XP glitches/negative XP D) XP not being granted to users upon completion of lessons E) Immersion glitches F) General slowness and crashing of the website. There is nothing that we as users can do but wait patiently for the lovely staff of Duolingo to fix the tired servers. Buy streak freezes if you can, as there is an indefinite end point on when the issues will stop, so until then, they will persist.
Best of luck to you, and have a great morning/day/evening.
I got negative XP. I was so confused, thanks for posting this, Cam! I had the inaccessible stream problem earlier too. Thanks for letting us know, I'll go get a streak freeze right now. Hope the Duo team manages to fix it soon!
Of course, Juliette. Glad I could help. And I saw your lurking in my notifs but could do nothing about it. =P
Yeah, sorry, just trying to mess with you, didn't realize the glitches were happening at the time. By the way, I also had a problem where comments would not load correctly or at all.
The official Twitter account has mentioned heavy traffic and new users.
Whether that's all it is ... who knows.
Thank you for the confirmation of that fact. I haven't a Twitter account with which to check such things. =)
I note that while it's not registering XP properly (a flash of negative numbers at the end of the exercise, finishing on zero), it is still regilding the skills as I go through them.
So, some of the bells and whistles might not be working but the core functionality is, at least :)
EDIT: I see also that while it's not registering the XP for streak purposes, it's still tallying the XP against the language total, and in my This week / This month / All time stats, so it really does seem to be just the daily streak count feature that's broken (for me, presently, in any case).
Interesting.. If the system is still logging that we've practiced, then perhaps when all this chaos is over they might be able to rectify the streak issues. Either way, I've just experienced it not tallying up my XP as I was practicing, and I'm glad I bought that streak freeze now!
Thank you for the heads up! I usually do 20xp's a day. Today 10 were not acknowledged. Think I will buy some streak freezes.
Thanks for posting this. Yesterday for 3 hours I couldn't even sign in - it just kept telling me username or password was wrong, then going to error page. Now I'm not signing out until this bug is fixed.
Even those users that had been signed in had no access to the website for that blackout period. =(
That "Ah!" set me up emotionally for "Ah, the folly of youth!" It didn't happen =P
That explains the slow app and missing bots tab recently. I was wondering what was going on. Thank you!
Thank you for posting this, I was getting a little worried. Totally forgot about streak freezes.
I'm experiencing D and E. Very worried. :(
EDIT: I just got my streak by strengthening in the iOS app!
Is this just for the website or the app as well? I'm using the android app and updated it today (haven't been on duolingo for awhile). I was using it just fine for a few minutes but after finishing a second refresher, it now says I'm offline and can't do any other courses, look at the store, etc.
Sounds like I took the right two days off from Duo. I don't keep a streak though so this would have never bothered me.
So I have to spend lingots to buy a streak freeze - they won't be able to recover the fact I've done 6 1/2 sessions today (towards a daily goal of just 30 points)?
I'm honestly not sure. I wouldn't count on it. I would buy the streak freeze just to be safe. And to be honest, there isn't much more on which to spend lingots.
Thanks. +1 lingot for you. fwiw I was experiencing D on my laptop but only with timed exercises. On my phone I also experienced D, but no negative points were shown, I just got no credit.
Thank you! And I hope the issues get themselves ironed out for you shortly. =)
It's too late for me, I lost my streak and presumably won't get it back.
Cheers. That sounds comforting. So we don't need to do anything just wait ?
Cam, have they announced that they're actually removing Immersion? I don't really know, or know how to find out. If so, why are they removing it? Immersion of all forms is great for learning and strengthening languages, so I don't understand why they would take it away. Are they merely removing it temporarily to ease up on the servers? I haven't looked around much, I'll see what I can find. I haven't been on much at all the last few days, what with all the glitches and problems and garbled information we've been getting from the staff.
Yeah. I would rather they remove Words, something people never use and I barely remember is there. Luckily, they finally brought Activity back!!!! Yay!!!!
Has anybody got this problem? "I am on Gerund in Italian, second lesson, after responding to the question, the program freezes, and it won't allow me to continue. I've tried it a few times with the same result, and when I quit I lose all the answers. What do I need to do to get to the next screen? Thx.
