It's been an interesting (and nerve-wrecking) last couple of days here at Duolingo. Due to so much traffic, our servers weren't able to keep up, so the website and the apps have either been slow, flaky, or entirely unavailable at times. We sincerely apologize for that.
I'm happy to report that after working around the clock, we believe the issues have been fully resolved.
We know some of you had trouble extending your streaks, so tomorrow we will give everybody a free pass for the last couple of days, thus restoring all streaks that were lost due to the technical issues.

And why is the DL team so stubborn to disregard technical issues of individual users? Four months ago I lost my streak of nearly a thousand days because of an extension; I wrote to so many people about it (bchan the first) that undoubtably you came to know of it. All was/is documented. It was a glitch.
This is why I decided to never try and have a "streak" because I was afraid I would be upset by life happening, or lemons refusing to become lemonade. However, I do hope they fix it in your case. Nearly 1000 days is a lot. And no one should have to buy streak freezes daily, just in case of glitches.
Sweet of you, thanks for commenting. They never repaired it nor even acknowledged my writing (I was desperately floundering like a fish out of water). I think you are wise avoiding the streak. :)
I also once voluntarily gave up a streak of several hundred days when I encountered a classic internet stalker here and decided to switch to one of my other Duo accounts until he lost interest in harassing me. Turns out that streaks have no more or less value than an individual assigns to them. I have chosen to assign close to no value to a streak. Takes the pressure off travel days and other events as life gets in the way. Although I obviously try not to miss study days.
You might also put in another support request with technical now that they have finally acknowledged that the problem exists. You never know, maybe you'll get it back. And thanks! I've found it very stress free. I've even purposefully skipped a day, when I felt like I was beginning to get "sucked in" to streak races. lol
Lighten up, people! I am so deeply grateful for this free endeavor, let's not pile on with difficulties nobody wants to occur anyway, least of all the volunteers who are in charge of it. What does it mean to loose an x number of "streaks" anyway? Just appreciate the gains in learning the language, big egos aside!!!.
Same here too. I lost a streak of over 340 days and you lost nearly a 1000...wow! That's terrible, it can be such a demotivator. I wrote too, with no reply either. However, at the of the day it is a free app and I guess the DL team can't address every enquiry they receive. When I lost my streak I was crushed, didn't use DL for over 6 months! I can see you are made from stronger stuff - Keep up the good work.
You stopped using DL for six months because you lost a streak? You decided you would stop learning your language because you lost a streak?.... That's a bit childish. You should be ashamed of yourself. Seriously. That is ridiculous.
I decided to quit until I could get an alternative going to keeping track of my streaks so that I can gauge where I'm at for real. Less stress. Then duolingo decided we wanted NO friends, and that all of us mostly wanted apps only. I hate doing duolingo on phone. I decided to quit Duolingo until they stop all the nonsense and get something that works. I'll be back next year on Jan 1st, and hopefully, I'll have my forum ready for me to keep track of my own goals in.
Be nice if you are correct, but mine happened over a year ago. I have resigned myself to starting over again, which is not a bad thing. At least I have gotten back on the "Language Horse" once more. Ha!
Mine wasn't. Twice. I gave up. He says one thing, but truth is his staff is NOT listening.
Activity feed and Immersion are gone. The Activity feed is how my friends and I encourage each other.

Thank you, Duolingo staff for fixing Duolingo. Just a reminder, buying a streak freeze is helpful, especially when Duolingo is down and running slow, which happened for the last couple of days. I would recommend doing your daily goal/streak in the morning, not the afternoon, in case this happens again.
Here in Europe, Duolingo is also a lot faster in the morning, when most customers in the Americas are probably asleep. Maybe this would also help to even out the load on the servers?

My apologies! I just sent you an irate note regarding the apparent loss of my 405-day streak. I have since received your notification regarding the reason for this apparent injustice, and I now feel a deep sense of chagrin over my premature judgment, but how was I to know? Seriously, though, I have been mostly delighted by the effectiveness of the Duolingo program and wish to convey my appreciation for an excellent effort on your part. Thank you.
I think there should be a "highest streak" feature right under the regular streak, so that when you loose your 100,000 day streak you won't be as likely to quit, since you still have that achievement. Or maybe, some sort of trophy for getting to a certain streak.
I agree with the idea! However, there is no way you had a 100,000 day streak because I did the math and you would have had to be alive 273 years to do that.
Thank you luis for the update. Obviously, as someone who has a knowledge of the tech industry, I know how stressful it can be when the servers stop working. I want to point out that I had to freeze my streak for three days solid due to server issues. Luckily, I didn't lose my streak, but it really should be three days longer then where it's at right now. Are immersion uploads limited to Wikipedia from now on or is this one of the issues? People have not been able to upload anything other than Wikipedia articles for at least 3 weeks
This is the error that everybody gets - "This web address is invalid or the page could not be loaded."
Thanks Dr von Ahn - out of curiosity, is there any indication whether the traffic was caused by an influx of new users, or increased activity generated by existing users? Also, just to clarify, has access to all features been restored at this point, or primarily the high priority features of the site that facilitate the actual learning - for example, at this point I am still unable to see the activity feeds of other users (Which is of course non-essential).

Thank you to you and your team for all your efforts, Mr von Ahn! A brilliant online and mobile FREE app. Being featured on the iOS App Store no doubt would've caused some of your traffic woes. A little inconvenience is easy to bear in this context.
I really recommend buying a streak freeze, it is only used if you fail to meet your goal and sits there ready otherwise. If you feel you should lose your streak if you genuinely miss your daily goal you can always miss the next day by setting it extra high and doing your usual practice, or as I did, do extra practice the next day.
Who summoned the downvote demons to the thread? Is it now considered gauche to provide updates on tech situations via the only means of communication we have on the site?

Please know that Immersion is a critical function for the learners. Recent efforts to reduce or eliminate it are directionally incorrect. Making Immersion or even all of Duolingo self supporting by returning to commercial translation by the community is a good idea. Certainly someone who can figure out both recaptcha and Duolingo can figure out how to prevent the commercial revenue source from hijacking the non commercial educational purpose.
In any event, well done! You have made and are continuing to make a great contribution to our world.

Y'know, I'm inclined to agree with you completely on that, because without it all we have are endless sentences about ants in sugar and penguins dying of thirst. Now I'll admit that those have some utility - if they didn't I would have departed these shores long ago - but it's a utility which has an expiry date.
So the absence of any kind of access at all to immersion (including via the back door routes listed in one post that I've seen) sticks in the craw. When I go through the activity streams of some of the people that I'm following to give them a pat on the back for their achievements I see things like them having translated x paragraphs of a document. And good for them, it's great that they are getting that kind of experience. I don't begrudge them it for a minute. But it gets up my nose that the same experience is denied to me because my account was created on the wrong date or on the wrong side of one of those stupid, irritating A/B tests or because the moon was in the 7th house or whatever reason. (And don't get me started on the "iPhone All The Way" development policy.) Yes, I know Duolingo is free. But frankly I'd rather go somewhere that I have to pay for and where I get full and equal access to all the functionality that is open to other members. Having started a journey on Duo, I'll finish it (when I get to the point that I'm getting nothing more out of the exercises), but I think that at that point I'll be finished with Duo.

Thank you for the update, that explains the lag and the loss of my streak even though I completed my necessary lessons yesterday. This also happened in late July of 2016, are you planning on fixing all of the streak issues? I would love to see my account reflect the ~324 days of work I have put into it.

The percent-fluency indicator seems to be buggy. I've gone from 9% fluent in Spanish to 14% fluent by completing 3 skill-strengthening exercises. This is rendering it useless as an indicator of actual progress.
Unfortunately, this is how it works. They haven't programmed it to be more precise. I don't mind as I wouldn't count me as being fluent until I can read scientific books and philosophy in the language - two things that Duolingo does not have.
Good to know the troubles are due to a good reason - too many users. That's a great thing! I look forward to the restoration of my streak .... when you have dealt with more pressing issues, of course. Thank you for all the hard work to keep Duolingo up and running!
Is that why I can't access my Spanish club anymore? It's kind of annoying my German club loads just fine, but I can't get the Spanish club to work.

I was one point short of doing my 50 questions a day when I got the tick. So not sure what happened there.
A glitch like this reenforces just how amazing Duolingo is. It's the cornerstone of all my language learning and guess that's the same for many of us here. So thank you.
My goal use to be 50xp per day, I changed it to 10xp per day because of app issues. This helped me keep my streak. Now that its fixed I can go back to 50xp.
I'm using the French and am having trouble getting past level one. It seems like a technical issue. The questions about "la robe" and "le chat" or "la chatte" won't accept what seems to be the right answer. I've even tried a "cut and paste" from the answer given bellow, and it still counts me wrong and won't let me level up.
Hey, for me audio is still not playing (i'm on pc, mobile audio works fine) is anyone else having this problem? I still get the sound when I complete a task or answer a question incorrectly or correctly, but when I am doing a task and there is a question involving audio I can't hear it

Thank you for your wonderful site and for letting us know about the technical issues. Now that you have it back online, I only have one issue. I have set my learning goal to 30X points a day but since you have got it back online, it tells me that I have achieved my daily goal when I get to 20X points. However, my selected goal is still showing up as 30X points. I thought it was just out of kilter with when I finished the 3 learning sections, so yesterday I finished after getting to the 20X points, and I thought it would all be fixed today, but it is still doing the same thing.
Ok, we realized it was a bug/glitch, but what about "Immersion" and "Activity"? Those two sections are gone to all. We await answers.
Issues HAVEN'T been resolved. For days (currently it's January 19) now no Immersion has appeared, page goes straight to a 404 error.
So seeing as "all issues have been fully resolved" and Immersion is STILL gone, is it gone for good? SOME official statement on whether we'll be getting it back would be nice. If it's gone, I'll look for a different service.

It's so nice of them to turn off the best feature without any prior announcement... and I really don't see how it's so resource intensive, considering that lately only Wikipedia articles, which do not need to be approved (thanks to GNU) went up and there was absolutely no moderation, as could be seen by articles being fully translated but not taken down because of some technical issues that marked parts untranslated. Well, if anyone knows of a site that provides the immersion feature, let me know. I'll turn back to Russian, where I'm not as advanced, and my Spanish class, because I'm in A2 and Duolingo, without Immersion, is not able to provide anything that goes beyond that.
I have heard suggestions that the issue was the number of part-translated documents (because people didn't bother to translate the Wikipedia footnotes, for example) clogging up the server space; but it's only a rumour, DL have not explained.
It is the cavalier way that users have been treated that has upset so many - the fact that it has been done without warning means that many long term users have lost entire books that were collaboratively translated over a period of years!
Yes, indeed it was common to see the longer passages remain incomplete. But my time on I promessi sposi will remain unforgettable not only for the luscious literature but for the interaction of native speakers bringing us learners up to par on the real meaning of the text and even the disputes over which interpretation was best suited. We will never see the end --- oh, there are translations on the net--- but that's not the point. We were living in the Italian of the era. Even when I was off working on other languages I would be pulled back to read the translations and most of all the comments to see how they were arrived at. And now we'll have to work with "lol" and "like". :'(
Some of us are experimenting with using Lang-8 as an environment for collaborative translation. It is a clumsier interface than "immersion" here was, but it does have the advantage that the uploader can control access, and so get rid of Google-and-paste translators! Was there a problem in December 2017? I had a 141-day streak going. Duolingo decided I had lost it (which I had not) and offered to restore it for $16.99. So, that's discouraging.
I love this app! It makes the process of learning a new language fun! I've always wanted to learn other languages,but it seemed such a daunting task,that I foolishly thought it was beyond me. This app has shown me that I was selling myself short. Thank you for giving us this great learning tool!

Fantastic! I was able to freeze my streak just in case, but it's really encouraging to see that you're willing to work so hard to fix problems like that. Duolingo is an app I recommend a lot to other people, and I'm glad I can feel confident about continuing to do so!

Thank you for letting us know and thanks for such a wonderful place to learn languages. I've noticed that my "Double or Nothing" is not counting the streak (i.e. has stayed at 0) for the past few days. Is that part of the issues you have mentioned? (January 12, 2017)
My app crashed about 4-5 times today (Jan 12th) as I was nearing the end of my complete tree in French. It seemed the closer I would get to the making the last bulb golden the more often it would crash on me. I got so frustrated in the end because despite my completing the tree in the midst of all that - I lost fluency points because of the crashes!

I've lost a streak several times: about three times when I had less than 100 days and twice when I had between 100 and 300 days. Sure, I was annoyed when the system failed me, when I hadn't purchased a streak freeze, and when I had miscalculated the time and the loss was my own fault. So I learned to be philosophical because I didn't join duoLingo for the lingots. I joined to learn Spanish, and enjoy the journey. Thank you, Mr, von Ahn and the hardworking staff who keep Duo going. The game is what makes it fun, but the knowledge is what makes it worthwhile. Also, thanks for reinstating Immersion. It's the hardest part, but it's the most rewarding.

since this is a linguistic site, and you also happen to be the CEO of Duolingo, may I point out that the academic opinion is split on whether the correct spelling of an expression that you used in your original post is "nerve-wracking" or "nerve-racking"?
Unfortunately, "nerve-wrecking" is rarely considered as a possibility in these debates.

After viewing these comments, am I too assume that I have not been imagining that my current streak has not moved? I noticed that the check mark which is usually gone when I start a new day is already there.
the experience day goal is glitchy here's what happens: my goal is set to insane (50xp) but when I do 40xp, the goal is apparently reached even though it clearly shows 40/50 done I tend to do 50xp nevertheless, so I do the 10xp more then sometimes the next day I see 10xp already done for that day even though I definitely did not do anything that day
Hi have all the technical issues been resolved?,the only Problem I have experienced is that my percentage is stuck at 56 % on my Spanish course I have done all my daily lessons and plenty enough to have increased it so I was wondering if anybody else was having the same problem?
I have one question (it's not a "problem" but it might shed light on some technical scars still carrying on from this) - my daily goal is being reached even when I actually have NOT reached it? So I have it set to 30, but the moment I get 20 for the day, the tick on the flame appears, and in yesterday's case, I got the notification about my lingots for reaching 60 days... even though I had only done 20 of my 30 points (and that is what showed on my pie chart thing...) So the pie chart of 20/30 and the flame/notifications were disagreeing.
I don't know if others have this problem but my double or nothing froze a few days ago and I just noticed yesterday. It doesn't move at all now, just shows 0 of 7 days even though I've done 3 or 4 days with it. Was hoping to get that reset, Thanks.
The iOS phone app is still really slow for me. I thought it was my phone initially, so I cleared up quite a bit of storage, but I am still having slowness after lesson completion and odd glitchiness. All other apps on my phone are working fine. Are there still supposed to be problems?
Thank you So much for creating this wonderful educational tool. In high school I took French, Latin and Greek. Now I live in Texas and most of my friends speak Spanish. Duolingo has helped us communicate so much better. You are So appreciated.
My Streak Freeze option is grayed out in the Lingot Store. I used it earlier in the week for a couple of days when I was down with the flu and now it seems to be stuck there. Can you reset it, in case I need to use it again? Thank you!

Please add to the Lingo Store the ability to buy 2 day and 3 day streaks so that the Jews who are strict practicing do not lose their streaks due to Religion restrictions that ban them from being on here when its a Holiday that bans "work". Thanks! There are several Jews who needs this. A shabbos goy won't work as most communities would still ban this, as violating the no working rule. Thanks again!
Thank you Luis for letting us know that you are working on the issues. I am hoping that the immersion section is restored soon. I think I have learned so much by using the immersion section. I lost all my points last week but not my streak but, I feel like as long as I am learning it is a small thing. Its really a very good program and has helped me improve my Spanish!

Hi, I've lost Immersion again. Will it be back in the near future??? I love it.
Ah. I thought I hadn't missed those days. I just came on to write to that I hadn't and have read about the technical issues. I think I used a couple of streak freezes where there was no need but that's no problem if all is fixed.
However I believe there may still be some issues with timezones causing missed days. I just did a 10xp lesson. At the start of the lesson Duolingo was showing last 2 days 0xp. After lesson Duolingo shows 20xp today. So it seems to me somehow yesterdays points have been applied to the wrong day.
Luis are there some problems with the " Discussion " I am trying to pick up a thread with Ancianarica on spirit animals and one with Jack Elliot on Robert Burns. Am I missing a key function or is it the system ?
Well done. Meanwhile, I also lost a several hundred days streak due to glitch with no response ... that was about two months ago...I followed the advice of a mod who told me my account qualified to be "fixed" ...mais silence.
Please can you help, Luis? Even without technical hitches I have never had the immersion option for Duolingo. I've stuck with it, but it is disheartening. I understand this might be part of A/B testing, but if so, please may those of us in the non-immersion group have it now? Over a year is a long time to wait and I would love to have the full Duo experience.

Hy, uhm I seem to be having a big problem with my mobile app in a sense that it's not working. It acts as if there is no internet connection even though the connection is there and my tree is completely unavailable. I have tried both restarting my phone and reinstalling the app, to no avail. I don't care about streaks, I only care about this app functioning as i don't use duolingo on the computer and it has been quite a lifesaviour so far. Thanks :(
Ok, thanks, I recomend this: Forum section need something more dinamic, ussers most of time forget share lingots each others while we make the interaction.

Good day. Yesterday I lost a shock mode (and interest), before midnight (around 23 hours). Yes, at that time I did not work out, but after the training till midnight, glasses were enrolled for the current day (on the graph dips to 0 no) that I supposedly missed. Please return the shock days.
do you have any estimate for how long it's going to take to restore all the streaks? mine was lost almost 3 weeks ago (went from 54 to nothing) and it still hasn't been restored yet. have not missed a day in my course since it was released.
Hi DL team. The first time I used the app it, after a couple of weeks, constantly crashed. Uninstalled and reinstalled. Worked well for about a month, till it kept reverting to Portuguese. It wouldn't allow access to French. Again, uninstalled and reinstalled. Now, after two months, certain voice related questions are mute. Very frustrating. Is it my phone, the app or because I cannot financially contribute to the mission?

I lost my serie of more than 530 days, how to recover it? please, I'm ready to pay.
I am having issues in the section entitled “Family” One of the sentences in french beginning with the phrase@I have five brothers and sisters, three sisters, asks you to pull up text boxes but there are not enough text boxes to complete the sentence. I keep hitting “report” each time the sentence comes up. Eventually it bombs me out of that section and I cannot complete.
You may not have seen the discussion about this, but in: "I have five siblings, three sisters and two brothers", https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/609138$from_email%3Dcomment&comment_id%3D28690444, Sitesurf gives an explanation which may help. I sympathise, it would be a good idea if Duolingo would change that unless you give it the answer it wants, even if you have reported it for being incorrect, it just will not let you continue.
I'm sorry but problems are still present today, with unsaved progresses and streak resets
It has become impossible for me to complete regular lessons. Please delete ID# 1144414934 which evidently acts as a default ID, I think the correct address for accurate history is e066lovx . Last week 80 crowns disappeared from my record while I watched an automatic change from e066lovx to 1144414934.
Still having same problem, now won’t verify my e mail after sending me an e mail. How do I get my 93 day streak back
Your new update has deleted ALL my progress (I was really far along, too) and I need that back because I refuse to start with basic 1 again if I was on possession 2. Please fix this
My crown level was really high (50+) and your new update wiped it all out, leaving me with 5, please fix this
Is there a problem right now with resolution? Word banks are not showing up on my page, And all the resolutions are super weird and not working. Please let me know. I love Duolingo and I really want to keep moving forward. However right now I can't move past a particular page because the options for the sentence aren't showing and I can't choose one.
There are still issues with saving progress, I have lost an entire section on my french due to this bug. The progress/ level will either be fixed or I will stop using Doulingo. I will defiantly not be going through an entire section again just because of some bug.
