ICELANDIC WORD OF THE WEEK: WEEK #3
SJÓNVARP (neuter singular)
- TV (Set)
- Television broadcast
- Describe the etymology of the word.
- Put the word in the indefinite dative plural.
sjón most closely means vision/sight and varp would mean something like projection.
1- 'sightbox'? I'm guessing here, but it's very similar to Swedish syn. I'm torn between that and 'shinebox', as sjón also looks a lot like sken.
I honestly have no idea about varp. Sightwarp makes a lot of sense considering what too much TV is supposed to do, but I don't think it's right. :)
Very close! Sight would work, but varp is closer to a projection of some kind. I like how everyone here uses their Swedish to figure it out! :)
This is so interesting! For 1), I just had to google and yes, sjón means sight ("syn" in Swedish) and "varp" can mean so many different things, e.g.
(mathematical) image or mapping
a bird's laying of eggs (which is "värpning" in Swedish and the verb is "värpa")
warp in a fabric (which is "varp" in Swedish too)
So, "sight image", maybe?
If you create an Icelandic course on DL, I promise I will try to answer 2 :).
A close etymology of the word could be vision/sight projection. I definitely could create a course, possibly soon. However, I have midterms next week so I must study :)
Nice! I knew this word before but it's nice to see it here. I like the fact that Icelandic has its own words for things like TV, radio, computer and so on. As others said sjón means vision and varp means projection. I don't know the Icelandic grammar but I looked into Wiktionary and found that the indefinite dative plural is sjónvörpum.
Yep. Vision projection is a close etymology. Though, it could be other things too. And yes, the indefinite dative plural is sjónvörpum! :)
Will there be a new word this week? I have been waiting for it. Sorry for posting it here but the activity stream doesn't work.
Hey, sorry. I may post one tomorrow. I've had midterms this week -- and I'm in AP classes (very stressful). Haha, thanks for reminding me!
