711-Day Streak Lost due to Website Problems

I logged in today to find that I've lost my 711-day streak! Yesterday when I was completing my lesson, I found the website to be really slow. I completed the lesson, but it didn't save my XP!

I've put so much effort into keeping this streak. It's what has kept me motivated to use Duolingo. If at all possible, please restore it for me.

A few days ago, Duolingo posted on Twitter that many people's streaks have been lost due to server traffic, and they would try to restore them as soon as possible.

That problem was specific to those couple of days. It's not occurring any more.

I don't think it's going to be possible for it to be restored, sorry. If you value your streak, it's a good idea to keep a streak freeze just in case of things like this.

I have nightmares about this, and I'm nowhere close to that large of a streak.

Why do people not spend the tiny amount of pennies on a streak freeze? I just don't get it. Although one common comment I see is people asking if the streak stays active if not used up the next day, so that confusion could be the cause.

Maybe it needs a tweak to the description so users understand how it works.

It's not until you lose the streak that you realize it must be protected in Advance. I thought incorrectly that I had to "purchase" the streak freeze After I was unable to continue the streak. My error. But there is no explanation of how the streak freeze works on the web site. Now I know. Thanks to everyone for their input.

I saw on their twitter that they replied to someone and restored their streak. I tweeted to them asking what info they need to restore a streak and they haven't answered. Not good, Duo! Haven't missed a day, even with this fiasco, I'd like my proper credit.

You might be better off logging a bug. Click on the help link at the bottom of any Duolingo page. Scroll to the bottom of the help page to find the link labelled report a bug.

I logged a bug mid-December in 2016 and I still haven't heard back. The forums seems to be the only place where there's activity.

That's true. They get a lot of bug reports, and there are only a few of them, and responding to queries isn't part of their job. It's rare you'll get a reply.

Logging a bug is for providing the developers with information they need to fix things. If you want a reply, you're right, you're better off in the forums.

I appreciate that the amount of support requests may be overwhelming and they may not have sufficient staff to respond. Communication is a two way street though and I have been disappointed from hearing nothing back, as have other from what I can see in the forums.

I tried emailing Duolinge, I put up a post on their Facebook page which never got published, I then replied to the email ticket to provide more information and revive the communication. I received nothing.

I haven't found a good explanation about how the streak freeze works in the app or on the website, but there has been good help in the forums. If Duolingo is not going to reply to support requests, Facebook, Twitter, etc., then make it very clear that it's a one way street only.

I think it's normal for people to expect dialogue and clarification when we give feedback to improve the program. Only then is progress made. But if they don't have the resources to respond, they should be very clear about it and update the FAQ so people don't get frustrated and leave.

It's perfectly reasonable to expect dialogue, you just have to understand who it is you're going to expect a dialogue with. The software engineers aren't going to get into a conversation with you - that's not their job. That's what the forums are for.

There's all sorts of guidance to that effect in the help section of the website - telling us to post in the forums if we still have problems getting the site to work, etc.

You're supposed to keep a preemptive streak freeze!

i had a similar problem! i lost a 50-odd day streak for no reason. i did my lesson, it saved, it showed that i had the next day on the streak, and then i noticed a couple days later that i was down to 3/4 days!!! very frustrating, i have not missed a day since the romanian program was released. Duo, will the streaks be restored??? very upset to see them lost, but sort of glad that i was not the only one. (sorry to all of us who lost streaks).

I was traveling and did several lessons off line. When I logged on with that device I see credit for the XP but I lost my streak. Duolingo asked me if I wanted to pay to restore the streak. Not Good.

The system that keeps track of streaks runs on the servers. If the servers haven't received the data about your work before the end of the day, then your streak will end. To preserve your streak, you need to let your phone synchronise with the servers - I know that's difficult when you're travelling. It's worth having a streak freeze in place in case of times like this.

Thanks. I have a streak freeze in place now. Does it just stay there until I need it? This time I crossed the international date line and there was no way a sync would help because I "lost an entire day" during travel. I expected the sync after landing would update the streak with the XP I did during the flight. It should the XP for a few hours and then they went away.

Hiya,

Your streak freeze does not come into use until you have not wasted a day of inactivity. @duolingoJCS

You can't lose more than one day going the (?)wrong way round the globe, so a streak freeze ought to cover you. And yes, once bought it stays there til you need it (at least I bought one some time ago which is still greyed out)

Yep, this happened to me, lost a 291 day streak through no fault of my own. Completed the needed xp well before midnight, today I log in and find that this practice has been recorded as done today and I get zero for yesterday.

It's a good thing Duolingo has no swearing modules, because I would certainly be using these if it did.
