It used to be that when este was used as demonstrative pronoun (pronombres demonstrativos) it had an accent (la tilde diacrítica) in the first e. But, RAE had revised the rules and now no such accent is needed.

Similar more recent change is with adverb (adverbio) solo (i.e. when it replaces the word solamente). It no longer needs an accent on the first o (although Duolingo has not yet caught up with that change)

Acceptance is not the issue. For acceptance both are accepted as Duolingo is not strict about accents. But, after accepting it will tell you that you should have used accent (when solo is used in the sense of solamente). That is what I am referring to when I say Duo has not caught up with the rule.

"Este" is an adjective and it's always followed by a noun, while "éste" is a pronoun and replaces the noun.

  • Este libro es muy interesante.
  • Éste [meaning, "este libro"] es muy interesante.

Although I've read somewhere that the accent is no longer required.

The accent has not been required for about fifty years, but some teachers and books are not up to speed.

The RAE made it optional in 1959. "For the last fifty years the Academy has repeatedly said that the accent should not be written on these words unless there is a real danger of ambiguity." "A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish," 5e, Butt & Benjamin, Routledge, p. 82.
