A love letter to my Immersion friends
All good things must come to an end. There is no happily ever after. And so it came to pass that Immersion is no longer to be. I wish to thank all those good souls who did not bat an eyelid when I decided that it may be a good idea to translate Ode to a Nightingale into German and French despite my more than faulty language skills.
Thank you for your infinite patience with my whims. Thank you for your guidance through the intricate mazes of grammar. Thank you for your wisdom and kindness.
I shall lose many of you now. One of you has already left a goodbye note. I shall miss you with acute pain. Thank you Siri, Pluto, Gabrielle, Robert and Ben. I also wish to thank everyone who has ever helped me but whom I have not befriended. I hope our paths will cross some time in future. It is a small world after all.
Thank you for making Duolingo a great place.
DuoLingo used to be such a great place to learn a new language, but I feel like the only good thing that has happened in the last five years is the creation of the Incubator. Every other change has been for the worse and has degraded the quality of this site.
R.I.P. DuoLingo, I'll miss you.
The Norwegian and German 2.0 trees (and then the Norwegian 3.0 tree) were changes for the better, in my opinion.
Immersion was good and jolly fun while it lasted. Now the new Immersion is a translator.
R.I.P immersion, I will never recover from this loss.. Now I can't reach advanced fluency with duolingo if something really good isn't replacing the immersion.
There are plenty of other places to reach advanced fluency! Take a look at some of the resources here:
Honestly, it was never attainable with Duo alone thanks to the lack of spoken practice with natives, and the limited listening exercises.
What I mean was that now duolingo doesn't have as good tools to achieve that. I've lived abroad and travelled all over the world and have had years of lessons in over 10 languages at school during my life, I know how to achieve fluency. The thing is that with the immersion I could practice 6 of the languages that I speak well to expand my vocabulary but now I have to use so many separate resources, which is really annoying.
But yeah your comment might be useful for someone who thinks that fluency can be reached only by using duolingo or some other apps.
Dearest Mari, you made me cry. I will never forget you, all your kind support and all the links for good music and interesting things. You were always cheerful, and that cheerfulness was very contagious. Thank you dear Mari! With all my love and best wishes, Tico xx
Dear Tico. Thank you for your kind words. I am going to lose you too, am I? So many losses today. If you are going to quit Duolingo, please do not deactivate your account yet. I would like to speak to you once Activity returns. Love, Mari.
Hi Mari, it looks like Activity has returned. How awful that they are doing away with immersion. I wonder if our protests can make them reconsider. What a silly optimist I can be.
Btw I just saw your petition and some of the threads regarding it. You are a wonderful diplomat, a talented writer, and you have the intelligence of a good lawyer.
Oh Gena I already have that site bookmarked. Is it the creation of anybody we know? Another site which is really useful is Lang-8. Ask Mari of Finland. :)
*screams IPHIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg I need to write a letter too halp
Can you please tell me what happened? Why did they get rid of the immersion? I have been reading these threads but I still don't really have an answer. Please message me or post here. For several years immersion has brought me great happiness. I would just like to know why. Is there any way to bring it back? It added a ton to the site. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
That would be a question for the DL team of employees. I suspect that there are costs in terms of bandwidth and/or manpower to keep it up. Any IT engineers out there who can offer a possible explanation?
Thank you Tico, thank you Mary! You're my kind of people! You are wonderful people! Thank you for support, thank you for smily at all! Your Anita, never will I forget you!
Fantatico, you're here! I wish we could still communicate on activity, I miss the old community feeling. hope you are well. :-)
Dearest Anita, I am still learning languages in DL. But how can we get in touch? With all my love and best wishes, Tico x
Dear Camilla, I am still here, learning languages on DL. With love and best wishes, Tico (+_+)
Hi Mari j'ai bien reçu ton mail Ta lettre est magnifique comme toi. Tu es une belle personne. Il est hors de question de perdre contact. Activité va revenir Jrikhal me l'a affirmé. Hugs
I hope we will all be back on immersion... you all mean a lot to me! Camilla
Camilla viens ici nous rejoindre http://www.duolingo.com/comment/20347474$from_email=comment&comment_id=20371986
I don't understand this... if you are such good friends why not exchange emails and continue to talk to each other? Or you could invite them to a language exchange site like Lang-8 and continue immersion there, does your friendship have to end when Duolingo says so or what?
I have exchanged e-mails with some of my friends but the lack of Activity makes things difficult at the moment. If you follow the link Luscinda has given above, you will find me and many other Immersion users. :)
Then it's alright, isn't it? I'm sure you won't lose any friend. Nice streak by the way, almost 1000! :)
It just makes things so complicated. We are still trying to figure things out. I hope Activity returns soon. There are plenty of friends I have on Duolingo I have no way of contacting right now.
I love my friends, but we only knew each other online. Exchanging emails could be dangerous.
Hi Mari, as Siri and others stated before: you make me cry! We had a great time together and I learned a lot from all the nice people on Duo. Without immersion, it will be boring on the long run. So many of us might say farewell. Nevertheless, I hope we can stay in contact in one way or the other. Best wishes Pluto
Dear Pluto. JoThelan set up a site for Immersion users. I know Siri is already there. I hope I will see you there soon: http://communitytranslation.freeforums.net/board/1/general-discussion :)
I think Mango is a nice program for language acquisition. However, the social and cute gaming aspects of Duolingo aren't to be found anywhere.
Petición in change.org https://www.change.org/p/luis-von-ahn-don-t-turn-duolingo-into-a-game?recruiter=17389770 My english isn't enough good. Very lovely words, Zzzz..We have to try that inmersion go back.
