Any good-quality (free!) Welsh TTS out there?
I'm looking for a Welsh TTS for a project I'm working on. It needs to be of certain quality, and it needs to be free!
Anyone know of one?
Info on the website says that it is an Amazon subsidiary company. Perhaps this is a recent change?
Ivona is not free. You can buy a personal licence for $45 per language or select from a group of different options. Commercial licenses are likely to be much more expensive. Licesnses are sold by a small group of Ivona partners.
There is a youtube video explaining how to obtain all Ivona TTS languages for free but that is likely to by piracy so I will not give details.
You did used to be able to download the two Welsh voices for free, though (think I still have them on my computer). Not sure whether that's still the case - it may have been when the voices were in beta.
It used to be free to use the www.ivona.com homepage to speak up to a paragraph of text - certainly enough for any Duo phrases.
By delving around the new Ivona site you can end up at an Amazon AWS page where you can sign up for an AWS account and use the 'Amazon Polly' TTS service (presumably incorporating Ivona's technology) for up to a year for free with some large limit on how many characters you can enter per month. I didn't get any further because they wanted some payment credentials even to use the free service.
Perhaps someone knows of a way to use the free Polly service for the free year without giving them your credit card number etc...?
www.lumenvox.com/products/tts/ has two Welsh voices (the female of which sounds very similar, if not identical, to Ivona's) and the capacity to try them out with custom text.
'Feel free to try the LumenVox TTS Server for yourself by using the interface at the top of this page. '
It sounds identical to Ivona, and has at least one identical fault - if you type in y sêr, the female voice has the same fault of saying sêr with what sounds like lleuad overlying it. As with Ivona, the male voice says y sêr correctly.
It seems to need Adobe Flash, which Ivona doesn't, so didn't work on an iPhone and I had to turn to Windows to try it out. It didn't work on a Mac which didn't have Flash installed.
You could get in contact with the Canolfan Bedwyr at Bangor University and discuss your project with them. They work with Welsh language technology for a wide range of applications and may be able to advise.
They do have a TTS demo on their web-site. From the information on the site, this may be based on the 'Festival' TTS software, which seems to be easily available.
otsogutxi, I noticed that you are level 25 in German, but you haven't started Welsh.
