it all depends on the context: if someone says "Danke!" the usual reply is "Bitte!" - so here "Bitte" means "you're welcome" . If I say to my son "Ziehe deine Schuhe aus, bitte" the the word "bitte" means "please" - "Take your shoes off, please." And to agree with Ralf61 - "Bitte" can also mean "Here you are" - when you hand someone a drink, for example.


There aren't a lot of people here who are that fluent. Please take it easy on them.
