I saw job postings for people fluent in Japanese months ago, so I assume they have people working on it. If you are learning Japanese, in the meantime I would check out Anki, All Japanese All The Time, Reviewing the Kanji, and Fixoodle.

show your support for the japanese language addition :) http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7919/5tei.jpg
Anki and Reviewing the Kanji are indispensable. I studied the kana and kanji on my own with Heisig's books, anki, and kanji.koohii.com, and then enrolled in a first-year college Japanese course. Of course I continued using anki in the class. I too would like to see duolingo offer Japanese.
I'd just like to say that this would be a fantastic use of Duolingo's resources. Using their group translation project, they could get into the main industries that drive most American's to want to learn Japanese in the first place: anime and manga. They would both be highly profitable by adding it, they would be benefiting a massive number of people. Personally, from what I've seen, it would be much larger than Portuguese.
would love Japanese but Chinese might be fun :) then I can play at living in the 'Firefly Verse'. Shiny !! :) (note: in Joss Wheedon's space western Firefly, English and Chinese were the dominate languages and our 'heroes' swore like troopers but only in Chinese (A:to foil the network censors B: 'cause it's cool :) )

Man, 3 years and still no JP. Well, you can learn from youtube in the meantime. Check out this kid who is learning Japanese (in Japan) and makes videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaeHnskkJIyzrLK1cwbjWCg
And it's available now :) I think we can improve our learning Japanese a lot if we use good materials. During my learning process, I must thank to these resources: App: Dictionary: http://bit.ly/Mazii_iOS Learn Kanji: http://bit.ly/iOS_Janki Read news: http://bit.ly/iOS_EasyJapanese
