Why isn't "the mother" an acceptable translation?

Yeah, sometimes course look somewhat inconsistent. They said when you see một, this means a something, and without is the something yet the mother is wrong?

"Mẹ" sound like French "Mere". "Má" sound like French and Chinese "MAman" and "MAma"

So is the pronunciation supposed to sound more like you have something in your mouth? I'm trying to see the difference between this and "me".
