Cantonese SPECIAL Lesson 1: ✌ Happy New Year ✌ (新年快樂)!!
Welcome to this very special day of 2017! In this lesson, I will go through some of the phrases used in these amazing festivals!!
To start off, let's have a look at what happened in Hong Kong :)

Anyway, here are some phrases that we use at around this time of year, mostly to wish folk luck and fortune come to them:

新年快樂 2017!! (san1 nin4 faai3 lok6) = Happy New Year 2017!!

恭喜發財 (gung1 hei2 faat3 choi4) = literally: congrats on making a fortune; very commonly used after saying the above phrase

大吉大利 (daai6 gat1 daai6 lei6) = lots of luck and fortune

身體健康 (san1 tai2 gin6 hong1) = good health

萬事如意 (maan6 si6 jyu4 ji3) = everything goes as intended, and

歲歲平安 (seoi3 seoi3 ping4 ngon1) = peaceful every single year

All the characters are in Cantonese. Many Mandarin characters are the same as the Cantonese ones, so I think that is the reason being. Some characters, for instance, 體 is only found in Cantonese, whereas the Mandarin equivalent is 体
