"Naw ceffyl"

Translation:Nine horses

January 31, 2017

In Spanish we call horses caballos, which comes from Vulgar Latin caballus (in Classical Latin, a horse was an "equus"). The origin of caballus is disputed, but the Wiktionary states that it is generally believed that it comes from a Gaulish root, thus being a cognate of Welsh ceffyl, Manx cabbyl and Irish capall. There is also a possible relationship with Ancient Greek καβάλλης (kabállēs, “nag”) and Russian кобы́ла (kobýla, "mare").
