What is a difference between "aber" & "sondern"?

I'd say: if you want to use "sondern", you need something before that is in contrast to the part introduced with "sondern". "Aber" ist very often used in the beginning of a sentence, whereas "sondern" almost never.

There was something else coming up to my mind, maybe itʼs as important as what I have written above. "sondern" needs the part before to be negated and this is always, whereas "aber" adds another shade to what has already been said.

I could be wrong, but is "sodern" more like "rather" and "aber" more like "but"?
