Hindi Learning - 3.1 (Anaaraam and Pronunciation)

...........................................................Vowels in Hindi.

.......................................................... हिंदी में स्वर वर्ण|

.......................................Hindi me ("me"mory) swar varn.

..........................................................Hindi in vowels.

Anaaraam............................... Pronunciation...........................................as in

अ .....................................................a.........................................................b"a"nana

आ................................................... aa....................................................... f"a"ther (ban"a"n"a")

इ.................................................... e......................................................... b"e"come

ई ....................................................e (longer) ..........................................d"ee"d

उ................................................... oo/u .................................................... p"u"t

ऊ.................................................. oo/u (longer)...................................... b"oo"t

ओ.................................................. ....o...........................................................d"o"g

औ..................................................... ou.........................................................m"ou"ld

These are the first 8 alphabets or "anaaraam" in Hindi and also the only vowels. Adding one of these vowels to a consonant changes its pronunciation.

For example, क, which is a consonant, spelled as "k" as in "k"aput (broken). So after adding a "matra" from ओ, which is ो, to क (k) will change it to को (ko) and its pronunciation will become ko as in "ko"rea.
