Hindi Learning - 3.2(Anaaraam and Pronunciation)

................................................ Consonants in Hindi

.......................................................हिन्दी में व्यंजन |

.................................................Hindi me vyanjan.

...............................................Hindi in consonants.

Anaaraam.................................Pronunciation........................................as in

........................................................ velar

क................................................k.........................................................."k"aput

ख................................................kh......................................."kh"alifa (not kha)

ग..................................................g.........................................................."g"un

घ.................................................gh......................................... ."gh"ost ("gh"ee)

ड़................................................rh.......................................................roa"d"

.........................................................................................................................................

...................................................... palatal

च................................................ch................................................. ..."ch"urch

छ...............................................chh............................................."chh"atisgarh

ज.................................................j........................................................"j"ungle

झ...............................................jh...................................................."jh"arkhand

ञ..............................................ainya....................................................................

These are the next 10 alphabets in Hindi and all of them are consonents.

As one can see that most of them have a similar sound to English letters (like k in "k"aput or j in "j"ug) but some letters like (chh) or(jh) don't have any pronunciation in the English language. This is due to the absence of a direct or a combination of letters that can be pronounced same as these. So I have used names of Indian states to clarify their pronunciation.

The last letter is rarely used and in my experience, I have never faced a word with that letter in it.

Jharkhand - (Jh at starting)

Chhatisgarh - (chh at starting) and ड़(rh at the end)

It is ङ and not ड़. These are two different consonants. First is a velar nasal consonant, and the other is a modified retroflex consonant.
