Help us test Duolingo Bots!
We’re excited to introduce a new Alpha Tester Program for Duolingo learners!
Anyone with access to the Duolingo iOS App can sign up to improve the Duolingo Bot experience by filling out this form. Feedback from both French learners and native French speakers will be helpful to us. It only takes a few minutes of your time to have a conversation with a Bot and share feedback that will help thousands of people in their learning journey.
By joining this project, you’ll also be among the first to get access to exciting new content and features :)
We can’t wait to hear from you!
The bots seem to have stopped short (in French) - maybe they've run out of subjects? How about a series of how-the-French-live or how-Francophones-live bot conversations?
Putting out the bins - recycle bins, how often they're collected, is it municipal or companies, do French people recycle more or less, plastic packaging, whether rubbish goes to landfill or for incineration or for recycling, bottles and other glass, recycling old electric items, whether charities take clothes or old phones, etc…
The supermarket - oh, looky, Monoprix has electronic prices on the shelves so the item and price listed can be changed at the click of a remote! lots of vegetables from remote places; look how almost everything is produced in France, do you like yogurt? how many cheeses? At the cashdesk, what do you say and what does the clerk say? Paying and getting change, or paying with credit or debit card.
The shops - French institutions like Monoprix and Darty and Fnac and Tati and Samaritaine…
Moving in - you're renting an apartment; does it have a cellar for your bike, a washing machine (or is there a laundrette around the corner), a dishwasher, wardrobes, double and single beds, the French style of windows opening out, shutters, window boxes, where do you get your mail, how do you work the fob to open the door, or give your friends the access number…
Going to the laundrette - what on earth do all these instructions mean! How do you buy detergent, set the machine and then the tumble dryer, how do you ask for help?
Going to a concert - do the seats have numbers - where do you want to sit? What kind of music? Can you buy a CD of that band/orchestra? What kind of crowd is it?
Going to the country - buying the train ticket (single or return), getting out at the station, getting a taxi, phoning the landlord when he's not there to meet you, learning where the light switches and sockets are, and that the toilet has a fiddly flush…
Problems with the TV - there are three zappers, which do I use for what, and what are all these buttons? How many channels, and what do they show? How do I find subtitles! Can I play DVDs?
Renting a bicycle, and the laws on how to cycle - is this a cycle path? Do I have to use it? Can I cycle on the pavement? Can I join the Velib' scheme for a few days, and how does that work? Using an app to find out where the nearest bike stands are…
Buying a SIM for a few days - sending all your friends the number, but saying TEXT ONLY! Downloading and using apps - what apps are useful for visiting France, like the free GPS maps that will guide you around and speak the names of streets, and the public transport apps that give train and bus times, and news apps, and Bison Futé if you're driving…
Gardening - flowers or vegetables; what size plot; clay or sandy or friable soil; spade and trowel and fork and dandelion weeder; the lawn; which flowers will you grow? compost, soil amendation; flowerbeds; climate and microclimate; watering; pot plants (and flowerpots); pests - weeds and snails and slugs and greenfly; saladier and herb garden…
Job interviews - introduction, CV, experience, the boss, the HR manager, the receptionist, your co-workers; your papers - social insurance, work permit, visa, proof of qualifications; does the job include housing; you will be paid a monthly/weekly salary; hours of work, entitlement to holidays, sick pay, maternity leave…
Going to the doctor - sick tummy, fever, headaches, tired all the time, coughing, sneezing, aches and pains in the bones; virus, bacterial infection, accident, broken wrist; need a recommendation for a dentist, an optometrist; prescription, where to get it filled, take two tablets a day, suppositories (eeek!), liquid medicine, a tonic…
The dentist: open wide, this may sting a little, left back molar, white fillings, extraction, root cana - you'll need an orthodontist: bracesl, crown; social insurance…
The optometrist - look at the chart; is the spot in the centre or in the green or red half; different lenses - is that stronger or weaker; type of frames; bifocals, multifocals, contact lenses, laser treatment, lasik treatment…
Pets - walking the dog; the doggy-bag; collect the poo; what age is he, what's his name, is it a dog or a ❤❤❤❤❤, what breed, I have a collie, its colouring is black and white and yellow and… what is your favourite breed; puppy; vaccinations; leash; collar; harness; guide dogs; dogs in restaurants; dogs in apartments…

I got the email confirming I was in the test group - but it said I would be able to submit new answers and it would shake to let me know it was recorded...but I still seemed locked in to the default choices like usual. Is it based on fluency? I selected intermediate, so I suppose it might only let advanced/native speakers submit new answers? Or is there some option I am missing?
Bots is probably my favorite feature so I would love to help improve it.
I did the exact same thing. But every time I try to say a new answer, it doesn't allow me.
I filled in advanced on the form but it didn't record my answers either.
Filled out the form; I'd love to help!
(EDIT: Quick question: how will we know if we have been chosen to alpha test?)
Oh, thank you, I found the email. It was in the wrong inbox so I didn't see it at first...
bots to help people learn ? genius ! but like many others I have android so it would be a lot better if you design the bots for all platforms . or even on site itself .
I tried out the Bots just a few hours ago. I'm trying to learn French, one more time, and I think I might do it this time! The Bots provided me, a beginner, with the ability to feel like I was actually in conversation with someone. A bit frustrating in that the direction of where I wanted to speak was limited to the guided response that was being looked for. I have a little bit of French vocabulary from school days but wasn't able to use it. I came away from the Bot conversations feeling more confident that I could actually do it. Thanks! Looking forward to more chances to try it!
Is the test working for any confirmed testers or has nothing changed for you?
I love the Duo Bots! It's pretty neat to "text" someone and practice my language
this is great and all but there really should be bots for NON apple phones/tablets aswell. If you didn't know a lot of people (about half the world) can't afford a $700 iPhone or iPad. It would be a lot more convenient if all devices were able to use it.
They aren't choosing to not let android users have bots, they simply have many more developers for iOS. When more android devs apply and get hired, you're more likely to get the features and at a quicker rate.
Ditto. Not sure what I'm supposed to do - am I supposed to 'converse' back to the bot when it says a sentence?
this has nothing to do with the topic but... are you taking ALL of the duo courses?! Wow!
Yes, I am. All of the languages possible from English, including Japanese, even though it's not officially released yet, and all of the languages possible from Spanish too, like Guarani and Catalan.
c'est incroyable. how do you find the time? here's a lingot to help maintain your impressive streak :)
As Japanese has not hatched yet, how can you, and other people, practice its lessons ?
No. I don't have the time to do all of them. But I do practice a little of a certain language for a while before moving on to another for a while. This is why I've never managed to get my Spanish to level 25.
I think it's also incredible that you have so many lingots and languages.
Thanks! I like trying out all of the languages, and the Lingots just build up after doing all the lessons and keeping streaks. I have a bit over 1820 now. You can also get them for posting good comments or discussions. :D
OMG! Je suis calme, je suis calme... HOW CAN YOU SPEAK SO MANY LANGUAGES?! Pardon, je suis NON calme... (Translation for those who need it: I'm calm, I'm calm... - Sorry, I'm NOT calm...)
Wait, how are you getting Japanese? I've been searching around trying to figure out how people are getting early access. Still can't find anything though...
Sorry, I can't seem to find the discussion, but if I do, I'll send you the link. It has to do with some "inspect element" hacking."
Android Life. I love it but it gets me frustrated at times. Everything ia always apple!
A lot of people seem to have this android proublem. I was ust wondering why you don't just use a computer? Thats what I do.
I'm not sure what to tell you I just found it so easy. You just look it up and sign in and do it...it works for me.
Are we talking about verbal conversations or written conversations? If it's verbal, it would be awesome.
It would be great if there were both options. That way hearing folks could participate, but it wouldn't be limited to them. :)
What you actually mean is anyone with access to the newest Duolingo iOS App. I have an iphone 4, and I am keeping it until it stops working.
I understand you love of your iphone 4. I had a iphone 3 that I had to trade in for a iphone 5 ONLY because it's operating system would not update to the newest iOS, thereby limiting me on what apps would load and work. Until that time enjoy your phone :)
After using bots in languages I don't know well, I see that the bots are good for beginning learners. I would like more variety available for more advanced learners and still would like to see an audio choice when possible.
Hélas, j'ai seul un smartphone Android mais je vous souhaite bonne chance à tout le monde! ;)
I love the bots! It's great for helping someone learn to use the right words when there's not a 'multiple word choice' type thing going on at the bottom of the screen. I like that you can still click unfamiliar words to get the definition and even get help on replies when you're not sure.
Is it only on apple mobil devices? I use Duolingo on my computer all the time and I cant find "bots"
It's being tested out on iPhones and iPads; I'd guess (though I have no more information than you) that when it proves popular and successful (and if it's not too labour-costly to implement) it'll transit to the other forms of phone, tablet and computers.
So I'm going to have to wait for: 1. This to come out on Android, or better yet, PC 2. This to come out for Swedish And that's assuming they don't cancel this, like they did for other helpful things Duolingo cancelled (like Immersion).
I have been using them over last week or so and they are great. Would look forward to seeing many more chats
I have tried the bot a couple of times and I think it’s great to learn how to react in a conversation!
i love the bots. they give me kind of more security that i may be able to talk to a french speaking person instead of just learning tiny bits and pieces that i wont be able to put together in a complete sentence.
i would like it if there were sometimes more ways to answer a question. but thats probably just more programming. so you go girl! thanks for providing such a great platform for free!
I am very excited for the new Duolingo Bot to come to the computer version of Duolingo, because I used to use the IOS version but it doesn't work as well as the Computer version. I actually made a post a little while back about this subject. Also, I just want to thank everyon from Duolingo that is making it easier for me to learn French (and Italian on a different account).
I would love to help evaluate bots. Hell, I'd love to even have bots. But they're still only available to iPhone owners, aka the richest people in the world. Duolingo continues to spit in the face of its poor and middle class users who don't have access to $800 phones, and would like access to this on their cheaper Android phones, or through the web.
Only 12.5% of smartphone owners have an iPhone. No, that is not a typo. If everyone you know has an iPhone, you are a very privileged person. Good for you. But Duolingo was supposed to be about bringing free language learning to people who can't necessarily afford expensive things.
So where are the chatbots for the other, poorer 87.5% of the world? You know, your supposed target demographic.
I've tested this for the last two days. It's very good when I can learn a lot of words (more than those current lessons) following every context. I'd love to chat in more topics and of course, and any guidelines how to lengthen conversations with bots =))
I love the duolingo bots. I don't always have access to the iOS app and would love to see it on the online version and the android please!!
First, I would love to, second, is there a way I can leave feedback regarding other questions not answered on the duolingo forum.
What is Duolingo iOs App. How do I know if my DUolingo has this App or not. Rani Harish
Rani, "an iOS app" means an app used on an iPhone or iPad, phones and tablets made by Apple (which use an operating system called iOS). If you have an iPhone or an iPad you can click on the Apple App Store icon and download the Duolingo app (called 'Duolingo') and use it on your phone or tablet. The bots are available on the iPhone and iPad version of Duolingo, where people are testing them out, but they're not yet available on Android phones or on the Web version of Duolingo used on computers.
I would love to try this feature. Hopefully, it comes for the android app too soon as I don't have an iPhone.
You could try me on Skype (search for firstname.lastname@example.org). I'm not actually a bot but my friends think I'm pretty close. My time zone is London and I'm on line but speaking to someone else at 5pm -6pm, so I would see a message. ..regards james
I'm so happy for all the bots that are included because they can really help people engage into a conversation.
yes i have an apple phone so i would be glad to participate with you and help why not thanks for what are u really doing to help us learn more languages and being satisfied with this great app
Now - boot up Duolingo's app on your iPhone or iPad and click on the Bots section. They're only for iOS as yet.
I have used the bots on my iPod touch. It's is a really great way to practice conversations. Any idea when it will be available for Android? I also noticed the overall layout of duolingo is much better on Apple products. I hope that changes soon also because Android is way better than Apple. Or at least make it available to use on a computer.
After a brief flurry of daily and sometimes twice daily scripts, new ones have stopped appearing, unfortunately.
Hey guys, my friend and I decided to make a YouTube channel to give the opportunity to everyone to learn French ! Ninon comes from France and I'm from Montreal. In each lesson you will get the chance to understand the concept of the video from both point of views ! Each aspect will be taught in Canadian French and French from France.
Here is our YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UC0S8-ZGmy9UqN_BMoascH3A
and our Instagram: www.instagram.com/frenchfctc/
Thank you !
Those are the two languages I am learning too.I love learning French.
Is this endless list of comments about smartphones relevant for any purpose? I find it intriguing, somewhat alienating - is it possible to mention verbosity or prolixness? Cheers.
Bots are good to a point but leave a lot to be desired as a conversational tool because I have to anticipate what the bot expects me to answer. If I chose to answer in an unexpected way (for the bot) my answer is totally ignored and the bot continues as if I had not been there - even though I get "Great answer 2XP"
Okay now I gotta just beg my mom to fix my phone's Cloud system so I can actually download this lol
This is awesome news and i'm confident i can help with French since it's my second language and i'm so fluent in it but you guys need to make an effeort by not considering Android users 2nd place citizens!! This being said I don't have an iPhone
I think I can participate, Iphone 6 will work? Happy to help if needed. Also an Ipad or computer.
All we are talking about are phones we are meant to be learning and helping! ah well, I think both android and apple are great.
aww too bad i'm learning swedish and i only know how to said hello and bye in french
I would love to be a part of these bots. They are tremendous learning resources
I have been using the bots and I think they can be a cool tool to help feel like you are in a conversation. The disappointing part is they don't appear to react or respond to what you say. If they ask you a question, there is an expected rote response. If you don't give that response to them, they still just say "great...." and continue on with the rote conversation. It is hard to know if you mess up in conversation because there is no correction feature from what I can tell.
Is this still a project? There doesnt seem to be any way of practicing communication skills, even if it is a 'bot' Hope you guys are looking at a communication feature soon!!
I so badly want to join but I´m using an Android phone. My computer is a Windows too. I´m done with the Spanish course in just 4 months and I was thinking of getting serious with French.
Reading some of these nasty comments about one another, I have to wonder why these boards aren't moderated? I'm a mod at the cruisecritic boards, and everything remains nice!
I have seen it on my son's ipad and i would like to use it, seems wonderful. Could it be developed for logins through the web site as well or for android? Because I use the last two to learn with Duolingo.
By the way, it is so interesting to see the different options in different platforms; like clubs on android and ipad but no clubs on the web, or the magnificent timed practice on the web giving much more lingots for strengthening, which does not exist on android, etc.
They're awesome...ly stupid. I Literally can just repeat 'No quiero felicidad' And get two xp every time. I would fix that.
i love duo bots, but on everyone with an androids behalf, the should fix it so it can be used on other devices! :)
what dosent make sense is: on the duolingo app bots are available but on computer its not! mabye their having trouble carrying over?
when they finally get bots on computer it would be awesome! in my opinoin bots are really good way to learn a language
I like the bots a lot. I think it could be improved by adding the pronunciation feature. Sometimes there are new words in the chats and it would be nice if I could hear the pronunciation of the words when I go back and click on them. The definitions are available when I click on the words and it would be great to hear the pronunciations too.
um... what is the bot? Is it like AI or something? You know Artificial Intelligence? 'Cause I don't understand.
I have tried the app and try to do my french on it everyday. The bots are pretty good, but they don't really listen to my answers. For example, the bot asked"Which shirt should I wear? Black or Blue?" I picked blue and it said Black. This has happened many times. Please fix this!!
So the forum is entirely safe? I see your a moderator. But you know. People have their ways.
Of course we have TO have APPLE what about android?
If anybody read this then umm
Comment ça va?
I don't understand how if actions are stronger than words, why is the pen mightier than the sword?????????
I have an android :(
However I have to congratulations the Duolingo team about the idea!
This looks cool! I might do it later since this website is amazing in my opinion, but I truly think they should add like a little guide of "words" I mean, how to pronounce every single letter for example "R" in French is mostly as a "G"
I have found this website because I was looking for a website where I didn't had to pay and easily be able to learn a new language. I know how to fluently speak Spanish and English and I am learning French.
I had hoped to be able to test myself after completing the French program, but cannot find where to do this. Are tests available? Thank you.
