A few days ago I posted my guide about which Duolingo course you should take for which country ( https://www.duolingo.com/comment/20743201 ) which took me many hours of research time and last night it already had about 27 upvotes. So far so thankful.

But this morning as I checked the new comments I discovered that it had lost at least 11 upvotes down to 16 and I have no idea how that could happen.

I mean I did research and offered different languages for almost every country and asked you to help me if something wasn't right and these downvotes came without any comment.

That's not the first time something like that happened. Looks like I should rather mind my own business and draw back from the forums. It's not quite rewarding if you don't get any chance to make it better.

(Edit: I just noticed that it's happening to this post as well: From about 21 down to 10)

Most likely it was a bunch of kids just being trolls and had nothing to do with the quality or usefulness of your post. It's really annoying and disheartening when someone goes to a lot of trouble to share something, and have it degraded like that. :(

The Duolingo forums, unfortunately, are a troll's paradise. Anyone can register any number of accounts. A single abusive person with time on their hands could take a discussion to +100 or -100.

If you want to keep creating interesting, useful posts, I suggest doing what several forum users already do: start a blog somewhere else, and just post links to the Duolingo forum. (And, of course, save your posts on your own computer as additional backup.)

There's no guarantee that these forums will even continue to exist in the long term. Immersion was killed off because fewer than 1% of Duolingo users used it. Certainly it appears that fewer than 1% of Duolingo's >150 million users are using the forums. Quite possibly Duolingo will eventually decide that they're not worth keeping. So if you care about your work, don't assume that this is a safe place for it...

It's a massive shame, but yeah, this place is a trolls paradise. I don't have any statistics to back it up but I presume it is mainly bored children or even scarier, strange adults with too much spare time on their hands. I would say though from a personal point, keep going and enjoy writing and adding to your post.

P.S. from my upvote, you are now back to 27 upvotes ;)

Everything is said, I'll remind you to keep a look out for opportunities to link to your post to keep it alive. If it's not downvoted to -5, it'll be buried under new posts. Great job though!

Thanks! I thought about posting a new discussion for every major update and providing a link to the original post. So far I don't know any platforms where I can post long texts like that.

The other useful part of the anonymous downvote is there is no starting a war between users who then start trolling the posts of someone who disagrees with them. I think (possibly incorrectly) that all posts that hit -5 are only temporarily removed and are reviewed by a moderator when they have time

The downvotes only make a discussion invisible. If you have the link to the discussion you can still see it. I don't think, that the moderators can do anything, but I don't know it.

They're removed for good, sadly. Many a useful post has fallen in the undertow from a swathe of trolls itching for a "good time". It's quite sad.

[Edit] "removed for good" simply meaning "taken out of the forum stream/list", not obliterated.

Most likely it was trolls, which has nothing to do with how good a post is. This is why I think they should get rid of the downvote button altogether. It can be used as a form of bullying. They go around the forums just to downvote people's useful articles.

also, the system is broken. If people only downvote, the votes should be ignored after a while (while still showing up for them)
