I am going to complete an a-thousand-days streak tomorrow. I hate this streak forcing me to do my language exercises even on a trip in a distant part of the world. I should free myself from this mental slavery! The reward are some lingots. I have more as 7000 of them and I do not know what do with them. Actually duolingo is a diabolic platform. Is is misleading me to learn instead of watching soap operas, reading the yellow press and other useful things.

Thanks Duolingo for you company.

I am German and I am retired. I travel quite a bit. At home I play guitar for two hours a day, I learn languages for about four hours and i am walking or biking for two or three hours. These are my daily tasks. The rest, like gardening, visiting friends and other things is sparetime.

When I started I had a good command of of English and Spanish so I could do the trees in these two languages within one day by using every shortcut. I had one year of French in college nearly 50 years ago.

Meanwhile I learned Dutch, Italian and French and finished 8 trees. I made crosswise trees. E.G. I made the trees in French or Italian from English and Spanish. The experience levels in a language are not added. I got level 22 in French from English and Level 21 from Spanish. It shows always only the results of the mother tongue you use for learning.

I also use Memrise and babbel regularly as well as podcasts. And in addition conversational language courses. Why that?

I am 67 and I feel that my mental capacities are decreasing. My memory is weakening. Duolingo gives me the chance to fight the process and acquire new knowledge.

I am in my twenties and it is delighted to know that someone in his sixty is still striving to learn the best as he can is incredibly satisfying. I hope other youngsters around me are more like you.

Most people thinking that way is to ignore the streak. Duo does not force you to keep it going, it is just another tool to help motivate but you are free to lose it whenever YOU want.

You are right. It was an ironical statement from my side. The streak tool does its job perfectly for me. But i don't know how I feel, if I lose it because i have no chance to be online for two days.

Not true. Duo /does/ force me to keep the streak going. I am totally helpless under its power. "Resistance is futile"

Congratulations! I have felt the same despite my number of days on my streak compared to yours. I've walked through rain to McDonalds because I didn't have access to wifi (which took half an hour), I've even spent 15 dollars when I accidentally lost my streak, and basically it's become part of my daily life.

I feel your frustration man, stay strong <3

Try the timed practice and setting coach 1XP goal.
Only one question answered correctly in the timed practice (30 seconds) gives you 1 XP and you have reached your daily goal.
Streak saved.

With the mobile app and tapping it is even easier...

Wow, 1000 days, you can get onto the hall of fame list ;)

Streak Hall of Frame (SHoF) starts at 365days+, nice: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/20702780

When I started I had a good command of of English and Spanish so I could do the trees in these two languages within one day by using every shortcut.

Unfortunately that will reduce the learned words on DuoLingo quite much (and I see it already in my DE-EN or EN-DE trees vs EN-PT).
To learn the max. of (all) available words on DuoLingo, you have to go and take every lesson separately; it has been said that strengthen skills alone won't get you those new words.

There are two threads about "reverse trees" and "do not test out", where also I linked some further detail input from Matt, explaining this more deeply.
Hopefully I find these threads and can link them for you here later...

Taking shortcuts and doing a tree within a day has nothing to do with learnig. It is simply a test. Thanks for your advice.

Despite having completed over 250 days yesterday I was informed that I had broken my streak. I still have the streak that allows me a one day break which I paid for with my lingots. (It's still there in the header.) I was also informed that if I paid £9.99/ dollars I could have the streak 'repaired' and which also ensured that Duolingo remained 'free.'Really Duolingo?? ......and there was I thinking that you advertised Duolingo as being free already.I n addition I can't find where it states that you can repair a streak if you pay for it.Perhaps someone can help?

Your 7 days stats shows not 0XP for any day.

You are NOT equipped with the streak freeze anymore, so it has been used already, but you still lost your streak. Should not have happend.

Who knows what is happening with the IOS app sync under the hood and what daily XP data are transfered to the DuoLingo server.
So many people complaining about lost streaks, especially when they use the mobile apps?!?

I can remember that e.g the Android app (Bluestacks) showed me for one day 3-4 days back 0XP, but the website server had >=1XP stored. After I opened the app, the server (web) suddenly showed 0XP for this day too....it eventually showed the correct XP later....I can not remember exactly anymore.
Anyways, this was quite a bit weird to me.

It seems to be a proprietary test feature (A/B group) which got hacked into the IOS app.
And it is not available on the web or Android as it seems...

As it is only a test feature for now, you won't be able to read much information about it.
It is just that you can find threads where some people complain that the bought repair did not work.

At least probably you can then contact the DuoLingo and asking for help, whereas not having bought it will definitely not get your streak back (possible streak/sync bugs back and forth).

Wow! That's amazing! I am a highschool student and I am inspired by your story! It's good to know that there are still hardworking, motivated people out there with all of today's technology! You are 67 and you are doing way more than some of my peers do! And that's great that Duolingo gives you a chance to fight the process of your declining mental capacities. I wish you luck guitarluehe!

Congrats. But, yeah, I've written on this issue in the past--the streak becomes a burden/obligation. Use it for motivation, but after the initial sadness it is a relief when it's gone.

Yes Duolingo is diabolical the way it forces us to learn languages. It interferes with my TV watching.

I plan to travel abroad soon.... In order to have internet while on my trip (so I can maintain my precious streak), I bought a pocket wifi. When the plane lands my first task will be to buy a Sim card, load it, set up my account, and do a lesson. I already know which internet provider to use and I mapped out where their store is located. It's good I have my priorities straight. LOL

I should probably memorize my Duo login so I can use an Internet Cafe, just in case something goes wrong with my phone.

I also need to make a chart of my new "Day" vs the timezone for my Duolingo day. They are several hours apart and it might get confusing.

With a streak of about 1600 it jfinally happened. I lost it. I am brushing up my Itàlian at the moment and i do it from Spanish to Italian. Unfornately this course is very bad. It contains many mistakes and seems not to be serviced. So I reduced my learning on Duo. Now, after some days, I am happy that the pressure is gone.
