Latest App Updates

I just got the latest update of the Android duo app and it looks like a lot of users got their wish with some the latest improvements. Option to get rid of ads, keep your streak over a weekend for 20 lingots, and a few other pretty cool features. Has anyone else seen the improvements? What do you think of them?

Man, I hate having the darned owl pop up in the middle of the lesson. If it were to say something in the language I'm learning that might be fun, but right now it's just another thing to click through and a distraction and good golly, who needs that?

I bet kids accounts will be the big money makers , as most people that do this will probably be buying it for their children , I know if my kid actually was learning and dedicated to learning using Duolingo, and asked me to do that , I would if I could ...

As a parent I must say that I didn't understand a lot of what my daughter thought was important when she was growing up but I still tried to get her anything I could afford and that didn't appear dangerous PS impressive skills for someone still in a baby carrier

As Jimnicholson said they are doing ab tests to see what will work, and I'm sure they will end up with something reasonable. Personally I don't mind the ads as they are really unobtrusive and they all have the regular large continue button to skip the ads.

I regret to say that I had an annoying "ad" the other day that showed up on the first page of my lesson. It had a red disc that kept moving up and down while I was trying to read the grammar explanation for the lesson. It was very distracting; I couldn't concentrate on what I was trying to read. Though other "proper ads" had a button to click on to change or stop the ad, this one didn't. It was from Google. There was a "Google" triangle in the upper right hand side of the box that when I clicked on it just took me to a Google page talking about the benefit of having ads, to the best of my memory. Luis said we would not be getting any "annoying banner ads", and yet here it is, and from Google itself.

They will be A/B testing different prices, to see how people react.

Just like on iOS, where there have been three different prices encountered for the streak repair.

I would say just be fair , what's with trying to milk every penny ? The monthly option inherently being repetitive, don't they know , get em on the come-back .... ! And I won't be paying just to skip a commercial ... Maybe they will be selling something I actually need ....

'Fair' is subjective and impossible to measure.

They will be balancing revenue generation against user engagement - things they can measure. If high cost items cause people to leave, then they may drop them. Other than that, it will depend on the shape of the demand curve - will more people buying the lower priced version generate more revenue than a smaller number of people buying the higher priced version.

I think fair is a bit easier than impossible to measure , at a certain point everything boils down to 'just how much can I take advantage ' ??? That kind of business is why the richest 8 people in the world have as much money as 3.6 billion people. It's not because they charge only what their products are worth.

Who is being taken advantage of when 10's of millions of people learn dozens languages on Duolingo? It costs money to run this system, and so far, it's been paid for by some fairly rich people.

Fairness depends on the personal value judgements you make. A different person, with different values, will see fairness differently.

What do you mean by 'personal value judgement ' ? Do you mean interpretation of equality or justice ? In that case right is right , period , it's not a matter of deciding for yourself , 1+1 = 2 , forever ...i would say NOT WORKING for anything more than 350% return on and, including initial investment and you may be taking more than you earn ...Or deserve

Basically yes. A communist and an anarcho-capitalist will probably view things differently, and both will feel they are right in an absolute sense. What they consider fair will be very different.

You can't measure temperature if we can't agree what temperature is.

OK, you could, but to discuss it you would have to explain what you meant by fairness, to give it context. You would probably label it a different way to avoid confusion, and then use fairness as a way of describing your emotional reaction to the value.

From your example: Many might think differently about the 350%, depending on the risk you took. Prospecting for gold ... Internet start-up... other risky ventures

I don't mind the ads at the end of a session, I don't need the weekend freeze and I don't see the owl popping up contributing anything to my learning.

I wonder though if these are really the things they should be focusing on when trying to improve Duolingo? How about interactive tutorials on more complex concepts of the language (subjunctive, past perfect, irregular verbs etc.)? How about bringing back immersion? How about access to discussions on iOS or chat bots in other platforms?

This is just my two cents. I appreciate Duolingo and the effort to help us learn languages no matter what they do.

Great! What a positive attitude! Rolls eyes some kiddies never are satisfied. It's just like Luis has said a few times. You can't please everyone, you do one thing and half of the users complain because you changed something, and the other half complains because it wasn't quite enough. I am paraphrasing a little there.

IG88, there are times that we do not have access or need a break. I visited a national park and it was very difficult to connect. A short break should be fine. I understand that some people can abuse it and 20 lingots are very little.

The purpose of the day streak was to indicate how many days in a row you were active. If you can take weekend long breaks or just buy back your streak, it doesn't indicate that anymore.

    https://www.duolingo.com/estudianteMTI3

Are you saying you have never used a streak freeze? Impressive! I am curious about how the weekend amulet works exactly, how many days? when does it work? Does it only work on the weekend after you buy it? And I was always under the impression that a streak freeze doesn't necessarily add that day to your streak, I just thought it sort of skipped that day while preserving your streak. Am I wrong in thinking this?

It's not like they force you to use it. Duolingo isn't meant to make people feel superior above others. It's meant to teach languages. If this helps to motivate more people, what's the big deal???

    https://www.duolingo.com/estudianteMTI3

Yes and I think that is their main goal, to provide a learning platform geared towards kids in school as a supplement to the language resources that they already have. I would venture to say that elementary school students have been the primary users of Duolingo for quite a while now, maybe even since it was first started.
