Duo, hold me.

I've been informed I received a 50% scholarship to study italian in italy with the Scuola Dante Alighiero this summer, I'm so thrilled and I wanted to post it here since two months ago I was a complete 0 in italian and now I was able to get my scholarship for a summer program, using mostly the italian I learnt here, I know this doesn't concern much people, but I'm so happy about it I needed to share.

Congratulations to you! That's a wonderful achievement and we celebrate with you! Believe it or not, this does concern every member of this community; it's a testament to the real world value / growth that the use of Duolingo can result in. I apologize for the lengthy response, but I felt you really needed to know why it's really a wonderful thing that you shared this news with everyone.

Some people have started from no exposure to the language, like yourself. Some people have studied for many years, were conversational, fell out of practice, and now are using Duo as a refresher. Others, like myself, studied language in high school / middle school for several years. Most of us have found that, in the real world, what we learned was a very primitive, broken form of "tourist" language, not something which could be used in actual conversation. Many of us recognized some written words, but had poor pronunciations and looked like deer in headlights when trying to decipher what native speakers were speaking at a normal pace. I was one of the top students in my class, making straight A's on every test... and found that it meant nothing; I couldn't hold a basic conversation beyond a basic introduction. All the other vocabulary and grammar I learned were either ones which we were taught to speak at too slow a pace or which would never be applicable to anyone you interact with in a normal situation. It was the equivalent of a telemarketer memorizing an impersonal, ancient cold call script and then not having the slightest clue of how to improvise when a real person starts to respond.

To us all, Duolingo has offered a feeling that we are making some progress; recovering from those early experiences; correcting bad habits; learning new information. For me, in particular, I feel I've learned more from Duo and also the PBS series Destinos in one month than I did in three years of Spanish classes. It's been a real breakthrough. I have an "a-ha!" moment every week.

My point is that many of us take classes or otherwise study and feel like we're making progress but it doesn't always actually mean one is learning something which can be used in the real world. For those of us who don't yet have access to someone to converse with in our target language/s, there's really no gauge of progress, other than the Duolingo tree, and perhaps recognizing some words on television. There have been many questions on these forums, where students eager to know if the time they're putting in will be "worth it"; if what they're learning will actually allow them to be understood by a native speaker, to any degree; if the material is a good supplement to other types of learning; or is suitable as a launchpad for other studies.

Your wonderful news today answers all of it... Why, yes... yes, Duolingo users can indeed learn something very useful / applicable to the real world! Even before we complete the tree, we are learning something which native speakers can recognize to a degree. We are learning something which can be a great launchpad for further studies. Whether you've started from scratch, been out of practice for years, or you're recovering from poor lessons in previous years... Duolingo can help you to make real, measurable progress in the real world!

Enjoy your studies abroad! May Duolingo continue to help you expand and practice!

Loved this! It is in large part due to Duolingo and other free, awesome resources on the Internet that I can now converse fairly well with my mom, a native speaker, and with some Brazilians. I still have a lot to learn but I'm impressed with how much progress I made in the span of a semester learning on my own versus the time I spent learning Spanish in school and never being able to hold a conversation with a native speaker.

Love to see how much progress others are making with this software... love the devs.

Congratulations are in order for you, too! I can only imagine your excitement the first time you and your mother could successfully have one of those conversations together in Portuguese. = )
