New feature request for all courses

There are a few words and phrases that I continually forget or confuse with others. I would like to see a "starred"/"remember this" button in the corner of each phrase box to save to a "needs more practice" section.

If one has "starred" a phrase, Duolingo would focus on presenting these more often in their respective categories while strengthening skills. It would be great to be able to see those phrases in a list, practice them independently, and remove them as they are committed to memory.

Duolingo will take note if you get those questions wrong, or if you need to peek, and will show you them more often as a result. In effect, it does what you're asking already, but without the need for a button.

I understand that, but many times I answer the ones I don't really know that well correctly by hovering over the word. Instead of intentionally getting it wrong, I find myself "cheating" more. And many times when I don't get something correct, it asks me again in the very next question, which isn't the best implementation or mechanism for committing it to memory.

This feature would just save me some time from copy/pasting stuff into my own note card generator. I think a "save for later" function would be super helpful for many on this site.

That "cheating" is useful. Even though you got the question right, peeking (holding the mouse over the word to find out what it means) tells Duolingo that you don't know the word very well, and Duolingo then saves that word for later, and gives it to you to revise sooner.

Within each lesson, though, you're right, you'll see each word several times; showing you a word just once in each lesson wouldn't be very useful.

I agree such a feature would be nice. There are words present in only the bare minimum number of sentences (3 as I understand it), and Duo's internal algorithms prioritize sentences based on how "useful" they are for learning, which is partly determined by how often people get them right. A creator of the Russian course has mentioned that some very similar sentences vary in their presentation frequency to users by a factor of 100. So it's easy to imagine a vicious cycle: word not in many sentences; people miss it a lot; so it gets shown even less.

Of course as with essentially every request for further options or customization, I wouldn't hold my breath. Duo is extremely institutionally committed to the one size fits all approach. And since the "all" is in its great majority app users with limited commitment levels, it's best just to figure out your own ways to fill the inevitable lacunae. The Duolingo-themed Memrise courses may be of use. Just ignore everything except what you think you need more practice on. (unfortunately, they might not be that good at including phrases as opposed to individual words; just depends on who made it)

I was thinking Memrise too. Maybe make your own Memrise course that includes the "starred" sentences you want to practice. But that involves copy-and-pasting, which the OP is trying to avoid

You can sort of already do that by reviewing the word flashcards. That isn't exactly what you described, though.
