Jack, here in the US in churches where they ring bells (on the hour and when church services are supposed to begin, they are almost all done by computer. In Europe, do they have people play the bells still, or are they hooked up to a computer?

I remember the first time that I saw the wedding scene in "The Sound of Music" and the young bell pullers were pulling the bells and being pulled up on the rope. That looked like such a cool thing to do - to be the church bell ringer.

I'm actually a bell ringer :) It's really not all that dangerous so long as you're sensible; the worst injury I've ever heard of someone getting is rope burn. I suppose we do have a language all of our own, with sallies, stays, and lots and lots of different method names...

When I was a Child I did it in my church in Scotland

It was important to let the rope go after the pull
