Amount of words in an average course?
I have come to wonder about this, since I'm trying to make a course on another site for a dialect that I want to learn.
There is a dialect dictionary which I use, and it is extensive -- has resources from nearly all Dutch dialects. The sub-dictionaries for each dialect do vary in amount of words, however. Plus, I don't know how many words would be considered average.
So, that led me to having these questions.
- How many words and skills does an average DL course have?
- What's the course with the least amount of words and skills - and how many of both?
- What's the course with the most amount of words and skills - and how many of both?
- What is the average amount of words per skill?
(For the sake of assumption, a skill = e.g. Basics 1, Basics 2; and a lesson = the sub-skills).
Is there anyone that might have an answer to these things? It bothers me, and knowing these facts would help me.
Instead of worrying about what Duolingo does, why don't you look at the wordlists for examining bodies?

Thanks. It appears that as for every question, the outcomes are:
- [AVERAGE] Words: ≈2215,69 Skills: ≈77,75.
- [LEAST] Words: 1108. Skills: 43.
- [MOST] Words: 3200. Skills: 119.
- Avg. Words/Skill: still unknown.
So, the average amount of words is μ≈2215,69.
Boxplotting the amount of words, it gives the outcome of:
MinX = 1108
Q1 = 1903
Median (Med) = 2215,5
Q3 = 2600
MaxX = 3200
Standard deviation (σx): ≈538,25 words
Double standard deviation (2σx): ≈1076,5 words
Summation Σ (total amount of words): ≈ 35451 words
So, apparently, 50% of DL's courses mathetically seen, would have between 1903 and 2600 words. That's a difference of 697 words.
If we use the median instead of the average as starting point for this specific calculation (rounds up and down in a nicer way), then:
σx would give a range of 68% of the courses being in between 1677,25 and 2753,75 words (or in between 1677 and 2754 words if you want it).
2σx would give a range of 95% of the courses being in between 1139 and 3292 words.
This is valid, assuming everything is normally divided, though. I have yet to check that, but it looks interesting.
Notice: the data are valid only for the X language for English speakers-courses, and the data is taken from a research of six months ago, so it might be outdated.
EDIT: Plotted it again, it seems to be normally divided, and with 16 courses, there is enough data to make it normally distributed. Nice.
I've heard that German has the largest amount of skills with 123, I think.

The average amount regarding skills also is now calculated;
Average amount of words per skill: ≈ 75
Standard deviation of words per skill: ≈20
So, this means that:
- σx for one skill: 68% of skills teaches between 55 and 95 words.
- 2σx for one skill: 95% of skills teaches between 35 and 115 words.
One skill usually has around 3,5 lessons. This means that one lesson would teach you around 15-30 words.
Edit from a week later (2 March by now):
Standard deviation of skills in a course: ≈20,93.
This means that the amount of skills in a course is variable with 21 words (bit vaguely said, eh!).
Thus, a course generally has:
- σx for one course: 68% of courses has between 57 and 99 skills.
- 2σx for one course: 95% of courses has between 36 and 120 skills.
Also, a correction: since the average amount of skills per course is 77,75 and since the average amount of words per course is 2215,69 ... , this means that 2215,69 / 77,75 ≈ 28,5 words per skill.
Avg. Words/Skill: ≈ 28,5.
I apparently misinterpreted the uppermost two numbers in this post as Avg.Words/Skill, which is incorrect: those uppermost two numbers should be seen as Avg.Skills/Course. Ignore the part between ''Standard deviation of skills in a course'' and ''Avg.Words/Skill: ≈ 28,5.'', that is a confusing part
I didn't calculate, what the the average amount of lessons per skill was, and how many words a lesson would teach you. This I shall now calculate, and a bit more.
Avg.Lessons/Course: μ = 336,5.
σx of Lessons/Course: ≈ 83,24.
- 68% of courses has between 253 and 420 lessons.
- 95% of courses has between 170 and 503 lessons.
Because we now know:
- the Avg.Lessons/Course (336,5)
- the Avg.Skills/Course (75)
- the Avg.Words/Course (2215,69)
- and the Avg.Words/Skill, (28,5)
we can thus calculate the average amount of words per lesson by simply doing a trick: divide Avg.Lessons/Course by Avg.Words/Skill.
This gives us 11,81 or ≈12 words per lesson.
Unsurprisingly enough, a similar number is found for the default words/lesson in a Memrise course, which is 15 words.
The standard deviation of Avg. Words/Lesson is going to be calculated later.
Yet Another Edit (on the same day):
Calculating the σx for Words/Lesson is done by taking:
- the Words/Course
- the Lessons/Course
- the Lessons/Skill.
So, it is:
Avg. Words/Lesson: μ ≈ 6,72.
σx of Words/Lesson: ≈ 0,88.
This gives us a range of:
- 68% of the lessons containing from 5,84 up to 7,6 words per lesson.
- 95% of the lessons containing from 4,96 up to 8,48 words per lesson.
This is, assuming that everything is normally distributed, though.
