I think languages are awesome and fascinating and I want to learn more about linguistics, but I've been having trouble finding resources. Does anyone know of any good, informative and/or fun books or websites about linguistics?

(I've read The Story of English in 100 Words by David Crystal and liked it).

How Language Works - also by David Crystal. A good summary of the field, each chapter is kind of stand alone. Actually, almost anything by him.

Have a look on the web pages for first year university linguistics courses. Their reading lists are probably going to be the most well-informed source you can find for introductory linguistics texts.

There are some videos on youtube of David Crystal and from there you can find others.

I recommend the the Miracles of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics course by Universiteit Leiden and Meertens instituut available for free on Coursera.

Mario Pei's books are quite good, and I highly recommend such works as How to Learn Languages and What Languages to Learn, Talking Your Way Around the World, and The Story of Language. Those are just a few. They are a bit dated, but they are very helpful. Also any books by John McWhorter are excellent as well. Check out his stuff from teach12.com (Great Courses) also. You can probably get them at your local library or through interlibrary loan. They are great videos.
