Weeks ago my mom bought a new phone. She had one of those old cellphones with a physical keyboard and was never satisfied with smartphones because they were hard to type (in the past). Then with the evolution of smartphones, she finally bought one. First I have to tell you that she never finished elementary school, she never had reasons to finish it. She was raised to be the classic woman who take care of domestic affairs and my grandparents, being raised by italian immigrants who were somewhat poor and only learned the value of work but not education, never cared about it.
About two or three weeks ago, I installed duolingo on my mom's phone and taught her how to use it. I was really not believing she would enjoy it, besides she always thought she was too old to learn a language or anything else. With time I noticed she started using every day even though she still doesn't know the concept of streak (she hasn't lost since she started). Last weekend when I had lunch with her we were sitting on the sofa and she started working on duolingo, then she went on to get a notebook with a lot of sentences in english! I thought about her, her life and her story, and I think I never felt so proud of her in my life. Anyway, just wanted to share this with you.

What a great story its heartwarming to read about how much you care about your mums past and are trying to give her the drive to learn a new skill. its never to late to learn i had a poor education because in england in the 1970s if you could not learn fast enough you were left to fend for yourself mainly because where i came from in yorkshire you where expected to just start work in the coal mines at 16. I did not want to be like the rest even though the mines are all gone now so i became a mechanic and still am i also teach motor vehicle at college so it just goes to show if the will to learn is there you can overcome anything in your way. I have been learning spanish for 6 months now and finding it great fun i go to spain / tenerife a couple of times a year which helps lol. Just keep your mum studying your story as really made my day thank you

It's sad to hear about your times in school because not much has changed nowadays. On the other hand your story of struggle and success is very inspirational. I wish everyone could go beyond the lack of incentive to reach better paths. Thanks for sharing it.

It is really nice that you can enjoy learning languages now, because it really is something that can prove useful whatever your age, and I think it is a great chance that you could find time and motivation to get into it, just like marcocaramori's mom. I hope both can keep learning and enjoy the pleasure of knowing more languages ! And thank you for both of you stories, they are really nice and motivating (I have always considered that other people's motivation contribute to your own ^^) !

Congrats on you languages marcocaramori :).

Great story, thank you for sharing. Indeed it is a very good feeling to have such amazing parents. My Dad is 83 year old now, and he is still curious about new things, he learns Spanish and German now, but mostly in old-fashion way :), watching movies in Spanish or German and using books. And it works! If you are motivated, you will find a way how to learn and move forward, and age does not matter. Two years ago he has learned how to use PC, last autumn he started studies in a Third Age university (which is for elderly people to give them opportunity to attend lectures). My sons are proud of their grandfather, as well as I am. All the best to you and your Mom!

Thank you for taking the time to share this experience with us. It's wonderful to see how you are interested in your mom's happiness and quality of life, and how you clearly value her for who she is. I hope you have also told HER how proud you are of her. It will make her very happy to hear those words from you. :)

Not only am I proud of both you and your mother, but I will bet she knows how lucky she is to have a son like you. I just started duolingo at the ripe young age of 70, and I am a retired sixth grade teacher (love every day with the kids). There is little that keeps us young like learning does, and learning with some one we care about makes it that much better.

That is just fabulous.

I've really enjoyed duolingo with my partner, who speaks Spanish & is boning up on it with Duolingo.

I'm learning Spanish & boning up on Italian & French.

I was always better at Italian than French.

All started when Mom wanted to download Duolingo to keep up her spanish studies when her teacher discontinued teaching Spanish.

Mom wanted to speak Spanish to the migrant workers visiting here from Mexico & make them feel welcome.

Duolingo did not properly download to her phone.

We need to sort that out, so she. An get on with that goal of continuing her studies.

Thanks Duolingo
