Amount of words learned keeps changing even after completing the tree
First of all, I'd like to apologise if this topic exists already, I just couldn't find anything.
A while ago, I noticed that the number of words learned in my Spanish word tab kept changing even though I had finished the tree. A search found a discussion post (which I also don't seem to be able to find again) that suggested that this would happen if you took shortcuts in a course. Since I tested out of most of the Spanish tree, I considered the matter settled.
Now, however, I have noticed the same thing happening in Italian - a tree in which I didn't take any shortcuts. I finished the tree nearly a year ago and have just been doing skill strengthens ever since. I've been paying close attention to it over the last week and the number of words learned increases by one or two every day.
Does anybody know what could be happening there?
Lessons have a fixed length in order not to be boring and because of that not all the words may be presented in one go, so new words may be revealed during skill strengthening.
In addition to that it seems that most courses are updated at some point. Minor updates don't necessarily reset the lesson but do mean that even if you have done a lesson multiple times you may still find a new word.
Remember as well that, somewhat controversially, different forms count as distinct words. So even though you reckon you have already learned a word if you get a question which uses a form that you didn't actually do before it will count as a new word.
@ruferales: Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. What would change the length of a lesson?
By length I meant the number of questions presented to the user, usually around 10, which obviously can't cover completely the content of the entire lesson. If the lesson would be presented entirely, the quiz may have dozens of questions, making it really tedious, so some words end up being skipped, but may reappear during skill strengthening.
So, I basically can never be sure I've seen the entire content of a lesson? It seems a bit of a strange contest to plan for more words than questions...
Yes, I guess it was designed to go hand in hand with the skill strengthening.
The lesson length is not fixed, it varies between desktop and mobile versions, and also due to AB tests.
In the Italian for French tree I noticed that they introduce a lot of synonyms in the repetitions, but I couldn't find out whether they are added to the word list.
There is one bug for new lessons (1st time):
The questions of the excercise do not always cover the presented ~6-7 words.
I noticed this multiple times: One time it was 1 word missing of a lesson; the other time it was 2-3 words of a lesson. Both of the same skill PT Determiners.
I am almost sure that I had seen it on some previous skills too, at least for 1 word of a new lesson.
After I strengthend the skill (not the global "Strengthen skills" button) on the same day, suddenly this 1 word popped up.
Comparing the "tips & notes" of the (PT) skill Determiners https://www.duolingo.com/skill/pt/Determiners with all those explanation tables and very nice sample sentences vs the real lesson question content (either in length or sentence quality) of the practice "Algum, Nenhum or Qualquer??" for affirmations, negatives or questions:
I was really disappointed how relatively easy the lessons were 2 times (1x new lesson, 1x strengthen skill).
IMHO the generated sentences by the DuoLingo system do not provide enough depth to really practice those three words and different meanings for the THREE shown cases in one batch.
The shown sample sentences for all the cases where (of course) not really used by the generated robot sentences.
I better should generate my own Memrise typing Determiners course :(
The question for skills also arise:
What does a user have to do to really get all shown lesson / skill words?
- Strengthen the skill
- Redo lessons manually
I believe I read that there is a difference between "Redo lessons" vs "Strengthen skill"?
The user script "Skill strength viewer" e.g additionally shows "dead words (0 strength).
Will a "strengthen skill" button really show those missing words if you do it multiple times, or would you have to redo all lessons of a skill manually?
Where will you see more new hidden words (not shown in the lesson tables) of a skill?
"Strengthen skill" vs "Redo lesson(s)"?
The other bug is that lesson/strengthen words, which really were shown in the sentences of the practice, are not always added the "learned words" list user database!
