It's just occurred to me, is this a contraction of "hyn nos"?

Not "hyn" necessarily, but yes an earlier form of the word for "This". (You can also see the same element in "Heddiw" i.e. "This day".

I was taught that noswaith was evening. How do you know which one to use?

"Heno" is "This evening" or "Tonight". "Noswaith" is the general noun for "Evening" so you'd say "Dw i'n gweld Siân heno ('ma)" "I'm seeing Siân tonight/this evening." (The 'ma is optional), but you'd say "Noswaith dda" (Good evening).

Diolch. I was wondering b/c in the conversation before that he said heno 'ma was optional, I thought that was short for heno yma. I wasn't sure. Thanks again.
