Thanks for filling the report. You are right. In American English there are a few words that might fit. In times past, I would have agreed with "tennis shoes", but now with the advent of so many different styles of shoes (basketball, workout, crossover, soccer, etc.) It seems sneakers or athletic shoes are our most generic categories.
