Using Duo to Cope With a Loss

This is a bit lengthy, sorry!

I started Duolingo because I found that I loved Spanish class. My teacher recommended the site so I got on and started to use it. I realized that I didn't only love Spanish, but language learning in general! Every spare moment I had, I was on Duo.

A few weeks or so later, a big school project popped up. I was on Duo less and less to the point where I stopped. All of my sports, school work and extracurriculars took up most of my time.

A few months later, my grandpa had to go for surgery to get heart surgery. It was a really stressful time for my family. A few weeks after his surgery, he was still in intensive care - therefore I couldn't see him.

My parents were gone almost every night to be with him. He wasn't doing so well and he passed away a few weeks after his surgery. The next few months were awful. My finals were coming, I got a knee injury, and my family was very sad.

I needed something to take my mind off of everything. I remembered Duo and started to use it again. Truth be told, I did most lessons half-heartedly for weeks.

My knee hurt badly and people kept stopping by my house to drop off flowers and food, and they talked to my mom and dad about my Grandpa. Talking about him hurt, so I slipped away into Duo.

I remembered why I started Duo. I started because I love learning languages!!! I got more serious about my languages as time went on.

I found one of the most supportive communities here on Duo and some of the most amazing friends!!!

I wasn't planning to share my story, but my thank you to Duo is way overdue!!!

Thank you Duo!!! :-) - SportsOcean

It is touching that you focused your time on something that can enrich both your own life, and the lives of those you encounter. There are certainly worse ways one could deal with grief. I am glad that you chose learning as a form of self-care. Most of all, I am glad that you chose self-care.

There are many worse ways, and I never wanted anything to come to that. Instead, I've been volunteering more and putting my energy into positive things that help my community! :-)

When we help our communities, we help the world. That is such a beautiful way to honor the people we love. I have a link on my profile of a small video of communities connecting within a community. Perhaps you might enjoy it. :)

Hi, What do you like to be called? Sports, Ocean,...? How brave of you to share your personal loss with our Duolingo Community. The pain of losing your grandfather will never go away. The pain you feel right now must be raw. One day instead of crying when you think of your grandfather, you will smile. Your memories of him will bring comfort. Would you like to share a favorite memory? Your new Duolingo friend smiling at my new friend

Favorite memory? I would love to! My Grandma and Grandpa were driving with me, my brother and two cousins in the back of the car - in a place that wasn't so familiar to them, but my cousins, brother and I had all been there before. We were trying to get back to our hotel where my parents and aunts and uncles were. We must have drove around that round-about five times before agreeing where to go! It was all for ice cream and a cup of coffee. My grandpa always had a cup of coffee, and if he didn't we'd be driving to get one! ;-)

It feels good to talk about my Grandpa. I used to avoid it out of pain. I didn't really understand why people were trying to get me to talk about him all the time. To keep his memory alive, I think. I kinda get it now! :-)

I also think they wanted to know your grandpa even better by hearing a memory of yours. The telling and the listening are equally comforting :-)

To be honest, I've never lost anyone close to me, and thus I don't really understand what it means.(Death approached myself once, but that's nowhere close)
I'm truly happy for you, before being sorry for your loss. I'm sorry if it sounds inappropriate, but if you had given in to despair and tried to forget it all or looked at all of those memories with sadness, he would die with your memories of him. I am sorry a person such as him isn't around any longer, but because of you chose to recover, he's alive with you! I'm very, very, very happy for you! (^_^)

I personally made friends with Duo to cope with depression, and I'm coping pretty well! ツThis amazing community and even more amazing friends (I think you know one of them very well :D ) have become part of my life and thoughts and (I think) an inseparable part of me, and I really don't know what would I do without them! Thank you people! Thank you Duo!

(Sorry! The message is a little too lengthy)

I wasn't sure if the "Duolingo method" would work (I'm glad it did!). I was just trying to be strong for my family, I did however learn that sometimes you need to just let it out and talk instead of holding everything in and avoiding talking about him.

I didn't originally come here to fight depression myself, and I didn't know if more learning (the way I saw it back then) would work, because I had enough with school. However, it did, and it brought much awesomeness with it :D

And, I applaud you. "Being strong for your family" isn't something anyone would do.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my grandfather some years ago and I still miss him. He was of the curmudgeon type, but I would not have wanted him to be any different. He taught me how to be a good citizen, that one has duties not just rights. That you have to vote and buy domestic products. And that you have to stand when they play the national anthem. :)

It is wonderful that you found such a wonderful site to make you feel better. It is good to keep your mind occupied. It doesn't mean you think less of your Grandfather. He was probably a wonderful man and it just goes to show you loved him dearly. Misty

Thank you for your story. I too have suffered losses recently and Duo is a great way to sooth the aching soul. Hang in there. Be okay with being sad, as 'doing your grief' is the process to get through it. Buena suerte con Duolingo.
