What does the "mal" do here? Does it get us to "let's"?

"Mal" is often used in the sentence "dann schauen wir mal". "Mal" literally translates as "once", but here, it doesn't have a "real", translatable meaning - it just makes the sentence sound more "off-hand" or casual. The grammatical term for this is "modal particle".
