Hi everyone,

I have been interested in moving to Sweden since my visit there in 2014. I began the course as soon as Duolingo added it, and finished the tree not long after. Ever since, I have been strengthening the tree, watching Swedish films and listening to the radio, and practicing my reading. I also took conversation classes, where they bumped me into advanced level very quickly, based on what I had already learned.

Happily, with my Master's program I was given the chance to spend several months in Sweden doing research for my thesis, and also working at an internship. I moved here in January and will be in Stockholm until July. It has been fantastic! I have at least one Swedish conversation every day, and I read in Swedish constantly as part of my work. I also pretty much understand everything around me - like meetings and such. The only weak spot is that my speech is still pretty slow, but I am literally surrounded by millions of Swedish speakers, so I'm hoping this will come along in time. My colleagues compliment me when I try to speak it, anyway :)

It is because of Duolingo that I have been able to progress as quickly as I have, and it is probably part of the reason I secured this internship in the first place. So thank you to the people who created this course - it has helped me receive the chance of a lifetime!

Hejsan! :)

Swedish is such an awesome language, so so jealous that you're experiencing life over there. I hope you are enjoying it! What is Sweden like as a country? Is it clean etc (because it looks it)?

Sweden is pretty clean compared to many other countries. However it's getting messier and messier. An explanation could be that the population has increased a lot for the past 20 years.

It seems very clean to me, except that they leave ice on the sidewalks more than they do in Canada! Luckily we are heading into spring.

Problemet som vissa har med att lära sig Svenska i Sverige är att vi älskar att prata engelska. Så vi har en tendens till att byta språk för att det är skoj. Är det något du har märkt av också?

The problem some have with learning Swedish in Sweden is that we love speaking English so we tend to switch for the fun of it. Is this something you have noticed as well?

Det är kanske ett större problem för dem vars modersmål är engelska, eller hur?

I am sorry to say that from someone who is living in Stockholm for more than three months and lived in the north for one year. my experience is totally different. Whenever you switch to English you could feel that you pushed them away form their comfortable zone. I could only agree with your point if we were talking about the new generation (maybe 90's or younger)

https://www.duolingo.com/TobiasHarms

You might be right that it's a generational thing. I'm born -78 and is much more comfortable at speaking English than my sisters born -70 and -72.

Yes. I try to speak Swedish at work, but I always feel bad that I'm so slow, and they feel awkward trying to have a conversation. So I'm going to language Meetups so that I'm with people who are prepared to speak to language learners.

This is exactly what I experienced as well - that Duolingo is great for developing reading/writing skills, but not so great when it comes to speaking/listening. If you want to be fluent in 'samtal' you mustn't rely solely on Duolingo, but watching Swedish movies, listening to Swedish music, radio etc. is a must. I've already been learning Swedish for 1,5 years and I am able to read books and type quite efficiently, but I speak very slow and have serious problems with understanding native Swedes (if I just could cut all the sounds that come from their mouths into single words!). It's a sign that it's time to change the form of learning the language :-)

Kan man fråga vilket universitet du studerar på? Både KTH och SU har en språkcafe/språkstudio, där man kan mötas för att träna på sin svenska. Där finns också modersmåltalare (och åtminstone på KTH, smörgåsar gratis :)).

Well done! That is very inspiring and reassuring. I am moving to Lund later this year and have started learning Swedish in the past few weeks. I am hoping to be semi fluent in reading-writing before I move though I suspect the speaking-listening parts will take a lot longer! It is great to hear that it can be done! Good luck with your Masters!

Here's a tip for when you get to Lund https://www.lund.se/komvux-lund/bibliotek/trana-svenska-i-lund/ Language Cafe. A place to practice speaking Swedish. As far as I can see it's free.

Thanks! Sorry for the slow response - my duolingo notifications have been playing up and I just got flooded with a bunch all at once!

My husband and I are moving there for two years for him to take up another postdoc position at the university. We are really excited about the opportunity! It is really great to hear that you made the transition so well and that Duolingo is fairly effective!
