My short story with duolingo

I've started using duolingo over a month ago to learn Russian. The story of how I started learning Russian is quite funny actually! It all started from a simple "привет" from my friend that has been learning Russian from his girlfriend. We were having a conversation about languages, he is learning English in school and a bit of Russian in his spare time. I, on the other hand, wasn't learning any language or was I planning to learn one because I never thought you could learn a language by yourself on the internet! Plus I already knew Polish and English so I didn't feel like I really had to learn another language. I'm a native speaker in both languages, I learned Polish from my parents after I was born and when I was about 6 I learned English in school.

Long story short me and my parents moved from Poland to the UK back in 2002, when I was only 2. When I started going to school I could not speak English at all! However, due to my young age, I learnt English very fast and by the time I've finished my first year at school I could speak English without much of a problem.

Back to the main bit now! Me and my friend were talking about languages and he was talking about how he was learning Russian, this is when I started to gain interest in the Russian Language. Later he wrote to me "привет" and told me to guess what it means, of course back them I had no idea so I just told him that maybe if I'd know the alphabet I could guess. Once we finished our conversation I became very interested in Russian and decided that I'll try to learn the alphabet by myself. To my surprise it only took me about 2 hours to learn the alphabet, which I always thought is the hardest part of Russian.

After learning the alphabet I started looking for courses in my area and this is how I found out about duolingo! I read some stories of how duo has affected people's lives by teaching them a language! I thought that I'll give it a go, after all it is free so I have nothing to lose. At the time I didn't have much to do at home and I was often very bored, which meant that I could spend a couple of hours each day learning Russian on duo and other websites. At first, I was very motivated to learn and I'd spend about 2 hours each day learning. However after a couple of days I started losing motivation to a point where I stopped learning. I was thinking of stopping to learn completely and giving up, but them I thought that this happens to every other goal/target that I have set myself. Every time I'd try to lose weight, go to the gym, start revising for upcoming exams etc. I'd just end up stopping after a couple of days. I said to myself that this time it would be different and that I'd stick to my goal and that I would succeed!

Even though it's only been 2,5 weeks I can already see a difference in my life. I've started to wake up earlier (usually I wouldn't even bother setting an alarm before 10am and here I am now waking up at 7am). I've started taking a picture of myself everyday (I always found the videos where someone takes a picture of themselves for a couple of years and them creates a timelapse out of them very interesting and wanted to make one myself for quite a while). And of course I'm learning Russian and planning to learn French and Spanish once I finish with Russian!

A huge thank you to the team that created and develops duolingo and to the amazing community! :)

P.S. If there is any people that are fluent in Russian and that have spare time to have a chat in Russian every once in a while, it would be great if you could leave your name in the comments! I have an account on pretty much every social media app/website there is and if not I can always make one.
