"He eats bread."
Translation:Il mange du pain.
When eating bread, does it have to be "du pain"? Why can't it be "le pain"? Does this have something to do with the fact that the word for bread and loaf of bread are the same?
It has to do with the fact that substances like water, wine, bread, vegetables... are not countable. So you eat "some" bread, you drink "some" wine.
In French it is called "partitive" with the following construction : DE + definite article
- du pain (= contraction of de-le)
- de la soupe
- des légumes (= contraction of de-les)
