Kan ni hjälpa mig, tack?

Två av fyrbyggarna går ut i det (grunda) vattnet, (tar var sitt stadigt tag) i kroppens grova garnskjorta och drar in den döde över sandbottnen mot land.

The parts in () I have problems with.

Grunda - Shallow

Tar var sitt tag - Each takes a steady grip

Are you reading Henning Mankell or Håkan Nesser maybe?

No, I am reading Nattfåk from Johan Theorin. Tack så mycket!

Can you explain me what the var in this sentence exactly means?

"Var sitt" means each, but when you use that construction you can put it before the object. "var sitt stadigt tag" means the same as "ett stadigt tag var".

"Var" would in this case translate as "each", https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/var#Etymology_2_3

Not that it's that important, but seeing as how this place is all about learning Swedish:

*Behöver(!) hjälp med en mening.

There, this stickler is off to bed.
