Let’s explore Duolingo Bots through crowdsourcing!
We’ve asked you to help us brainstorm conversation ideas for Duolingo Bots and now we want to take it one step further: help us create a conversation with a Bot by imagining a possible conversation between a learner and a Bot. Our first scenario will be renting a car. The learner’s goal will be to rent the right car from a car rental Bot.
We’re testing the limits of this brand new experiment. To keep things from getting too crazy, please follow these steps:
Each line relates to the goal of renting the car and the speaker is labeled either BOT: “…” or HUMAN: “…”
Each line is either a direct prompt (something that the Bot says) or a possible response (reply or question given by the learner). Bot and Human lines alternate.
1 line per post.
Each comment is either:
a) a new conversational path: post something a Bot could say to start the conversation as a new comment right below this post.
b) a possible response to an existing conversational path: post a response as a reply to a previous comment. We can come up with several possible responses to a given comment and vote on our favorites.
Make sure you post your possible reply below the correct comment and help upvote each comment you like. To make everything easy to read, let’s try to keep each line as short and fun as possible. Some sort of resolution should be reached before getting 10 replies and sub comments deep into a given conversational “path”. Currently the forum limits responses to 6 comments deep. You can keep the conversation going by posting individual posts underneath a longer exchange as long as long as you copy the previous line that you're responding to in your comment.
Here’s an example of how we think this format could look in a scenario with lost keys:
Let’s get creative!
** Of course nothing too controversial or inappropriate here – please keep this PG-13.
** For the sake of clarity and focus, we’ll remove all comments not related to scenarios.
UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who shared their ideas! The Duolingo car rental agency will open soon - you'll be able to rent your favorite vehicle from Duolingo Bots shortly! (Feel free to keep sharing your ideas below.)
Bot: Welcome to Duo Rentals! Would you like to rent a vehicle?
[Thought I would let the Bot go first this time]
Bot: unfortunately our flying saucers cost $351/per day.
@ bi6gv Bot: We are currently out of brooms, but they cost $100 per day.
@Rhabarberbarbara Human: Hmm... Flying carpets or brooms, which one would you recomend, Sir/Madam? And whats your name?
@ wittykittycute Bot: Flying a broom needs more skill, flying a carpet is easier but can lead to air sickness. My name is Bot1337.
BOT: We have a toll-free 800 number for making reservations plus an easy-to-use website.
BOT: I'm sorry, you will need to review and sign the contract in person.
BOT: Yes, we've automated everything. Just print out your one-page contract and show it and your driver's license to the attendant when you leave the lot.
BOT: I'm glad everyone is fine. We have an 800 number for roadside assistance. Would you like me to connect you?
BOT: Is the vehicle road-worthy? Can you make it our nearest rental agency?
HUMAN: I broke the passenger-side mirror while backing into a parking space at the mall.
HUMAN: The car reeked of smoke. It took a container of deodorizer to fumigate it.
BOT: Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you still have the receipt? We'll be happy to reimburse you.
HUMAN: It went swimmingly, thank you. How do I get from here to my terminal?
HUMAN: Okay, but what about my luggage? It's in the trunk. Is that insured?
Bot: Unfortunately, he's on vacation, but you can talk to him if you arrange an appointment in 3 weeks.
BOT: Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. You will need to file a police report before we can do anything.
HUMAN: Okay, but don't you have GPS tracking? I left the vehicle for just ten minutes.
HUMAN: Wow! The police force has officially entered the twenty-first century.
Bot: We have monster trucks, buggies, ATVs, UTVs, off-road trucks, pick-up trucks, muscle cars, and rally cars.
UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who shared their ideas! The Duolingo car rental agency will open soon - you'll be able to rent your favorite vehicle from Duolingo Bots shortly!
BOT: We do have a limited number of commercial vehicles, but I'll need to see proof that you are a caterer licensed to do business in this jurisdiction.
BOT: You can get an [insert car brand and model from the country you are theoretically in] or [insert another car brand and model from the country you are theoretically in].
Or, just give them the choice between a red or blue car.
HUMAN: I need something with four doors and reasonable trunk space. What can you recommend?
Human: My mother and father live in a castle in Edinburgh. There is a monument to my Great-grandfather there.
BOT: Anytime between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., make sure to hand the keys in at the office.
