Do you think it would be cool if we could display more information on our profiles?
I don't know what you guys think, I never seem to have enough room to put everything I want to say on my profile. I would type out sentences in my "bio" or "location" (which I don't actually use as such, lol) and get letters if not entire words cut out! Maybe they can change the placement of and allowed characters in the bio? It bothers me at times how limiting it is.
I also think it would be cool if we could tell what trees the users completed. I've heard people suggest a gold ring upon reaching level 25, but I think that if in addition to our owl upon completing the tree, if we could get a few golden leaves around each side of the circular flag like a laurel crown/wreath and others could see them, that would be really cool and also it would be proof of accomplishing such a daunting task.
Anything else you guys would like to see that could help in personalizing and navigating profiles?
I like the idea about having a "Gold Ring" around a completed tree, but not for level 25. Reaching level 25 does not necessarily mean completing any tree.
I think the shortness of the bio is to prevent you sharing personal information. Sadly, duo doesn't even let you tell people how old you are (for your own safety).
Honestly I didn't think about it being a personal information issue. Many people still share some information quite regularly, including age, despite Duolingo's policies. I wonder if the limit actually helps with that.
I think those are great ideas, but I don't think that duo lingo is interested in seeming like a social media website. Because of that they probably don't want personal information that you wouldn't share on a simple language website.
Yeah it would be cool to have more personalization options and those are some great ideas. I'm all for safety on the internet though so I hope they don't compromise the no personal info thing.
Definitively safety first, and just because more options are available doesn't mean you need to use all of them. There are some profiles with just a username, and that's okay, but there are also people who like to compose a short paragraph instead of a couple of sentences about themselves. Hence why I type the majority of what I want to say in the "location" bar, haha.
Right! And I probably should have made that "minimal personal information" instead of " no personal info" because obviously you can add some information about yourself without compromising your personal safety. But some of us are a little more cautious than others and I love how Duolingo is cool with that.
Q. How to create a link to your Facebook in Duolingo?
-Open Duolingo (e.g. in your browser)
-Click on your user name in the top right of the screen
-Select from list 'Settings'
-Select from list 'Profile'
-On the left you see a 'Facebook connect' button
-After login and accepting your Duolingo profile is connected with your Facebook profile
-You see a small blue and white 'f' at your user name when clicking on your user name in e.g. the discussion forum.
True, not everybody uses Facebook (otherwise they use Instagram, SnapChat, ...). But Facebook is good to have to inform about yourself. And with regards to pointing to more information about yourself in Duolingo, it is thus the method to be able do exactly that.
