Learning a language without sound
The Swahili course is interesting and I know deaf people study languages but it is seriously odd as a hearing person to study a language without sound. I find myself imagining what it might sound like.
I wonder if I will have a harder time learning the pronunciations if I continue without the sound and then go back and relearn it with the sound.
Has anyone else learned what a language sounds like after learning to read and write it?
For hearing people, I think it would be very unwise to proceed without the sound - we'd only be embedding the habit of getting it wrong in our own heads.
Yes, the sound doesn't work on my tablet and I've been doing it on here. I have now downloaded the app on my phone and it sounds a lot different to how I imagined it.
Well, not exactly, I am a native Spanish speaker and I had been studying English all my life, without any native English speaker. They taught me mostly grammar. So I had two ways to pronounce one word: 1. Hearing the pronunciation from an anglophone, which could be a good one or a bad one. 2. Guessing the pronunciation.
So at the end my English pronunciation seemed incorrect to me, so I did this: I Searched for the necessary information to improve my pronunciation. I reseted my Duolingo English course and since then I am re-learning how to pronounce every single word from the beginning till I finish the course.
You are learning to pronounce from a (DuoLingo) TTS / robot?
I have to do the same for Portuguese, but I have my doubts....
You better should be seeking for a course with native recorded MP3s/CDs!!!
Thanks for the tip and no, I am not learning from a TTS/robot.
If you want to know: When I searched for the necesary information I checked this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Received_Pronunciation and this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet which tell you how to pronunce English words correctly. And, now I simply to find the p. of a word by checking here https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page and consulting its IPA transcription.
I would recommend you this programme. Is Anki. it is helping me to remember and retain in my memory all the pronunciations. you can donwload it here: https://apps.ankiweb.net/ . If you use it you have to learn how to use it but it totally worths.
